This was pretty tough, mostly because none of these instrumentals did much for me.

49 has so many vocal samples that I wonder if it should even be considered an instrumental. The beat reminds me of Tomoyasu Hotei's "Battle Without Honor or Humanity", which was used in Kill Bill and many other movies.

My vote goes to 50, even though I find the whole thing pretty monotonous. That acoustic intro is quite beautiful, though.

51 sounds like a collection of riffs, but a few of them are really, really good. 52 has 1 cool riff and then some soloing. I'll go with 51.

I especially like the last two minutes. Quite a change in atmosphere. It gets calmer, very melodic and it draws up a sad emotion (not nice to be sad but sometimes one needs a little push to get there).

From the second pair I picked 51. I am not that fond of it but Schenker's melodies sound a bit done to death to me (especially one of the later ones). I rather go with the "collection".

Yeah, that was my thought process as well. In the words of Lars, "it sounds stock to my ears."

Number Song: Hmm, what "instruments" are being played here? Many originally perhaps, but what's DJ Shadow doing other than arranging?
Cloudburst: Quite atmospheric & dreamy; held my interest. Enjoyed listening to that. Indeed, Foro; the last section is rather melancholy.
Vote goes with Tangerine Dream (#50).
Ultra-Violence: Loads of riffs here; & collections of riffs are fine with me! Tone a little scrappy, perhaps. Could have been several songs.
Into the Arena: Pretty simple stuff, but very effective. Loads of nice(r) guitar work for me, even if a little familiar sounding now (--this was written in 1980 was it not?) The similarities to Adrian's playing are quite easy to hear, I think. Btw, any reason we're listening to it live?
Vote goes with Schenker (#52).

No idea, here's the studio.

1980 is correct :) Schenker has done a helluva lot of stuff, and every guitarist has a style (Dave uses heavy Legato, Kirk doesn't know how to turn off Wah pedal etc) so I'm not surprised there's some similarities across 40 years of producing songs ;) If I remember right, H has cited him as a big influence so I'd expect some familiarity there too ;)

50 and 52

49 just isn't a style that appeals to me, apologies. I thought 50 was pleasantly ambient and slightly eerie, with real buildup in the middle, before dying away again. Nice structure.

Second pair was a harder choice. 51 has bags of energy and I enjoyed it a lot, but it was dragged out a bit. I've gone for MSG because there was some lovely guitar stuff in there, a pleasure to listen to.

49 does nothing for me, 50 at least has mood, so 50.
I liked 51, even though it had no cohesion at all, but 52 is a much better song.

The Schenker melodies in the back half are excellent (and Simon Phillips and the band are in a nice tight groove behind him). Familiar? Only because he invented that sound.

49 isn't something I'd consider instrumental and the sound is horrible. 50 wins.
I was ready to vote for 51 but then I heard the final minute and a half of Schenker's song and it made me change my mind. 52 wins.

Edit: never mind, the poll has been closed.
