The Soundhouse Tapes

Hello everyone! My first query being, is it a Demo tape, an EP or originally a Demo but later re-released as EP?

Four songs were recorded during the sessions i.e. Iron Maiden, Invasion, Prowler and Strange World (which did not make it to the tape but was in Best Of The Beast compilation). But I see different versions in YouTube where Sanctuary, Running Free (Steve on vocals), live versions of Transylvania and Drifter and even Rhythm Of The Beast (which has Nicko and Dave; recorded in the early 90s) are there as well. Was there a re-release and these tracks were added later?

Anyway, a big shout out to the one and only Mr. @paulcairns for being a part of the legacy and I hope to see more of you in this forum. I just love the Soundhouse version of Prowler. :edmetal:

The band recorded a demo containing four tracks at Spaceward Studio on 30/31 December 1978. They handed out copies of that tape (the original master was deleted before Steve could purchase it from the studio) to DJs and clubs in London, most significantly Neal Kay.

Afterwards, Maiden played pub and club gigs to increasingly large audiences, and they released an EP called the Soundhouse Tapes in November 1979, which included three of the four tracks from that demo, Strange World was omitted. It was limited to 5000 copies.

In 1996, all four tracks (i.e., including Strange World) featured in the various versions of Best of the Beast. However, no version has all four of them at the same time.

There was a CD replica in 2002 that was available as a mail-in order for people who purchased the Metal-Is reissues in the US. It was limited to 666 copies and cost $6.66 (how creative).

That's it. Any version that has other tracks is a bootleg. There were no official re-releases with extra tracks or anything like that. What you saw is likely a bootleg compilation somebody made that included live b-sides and other hard to find recordings.

I think the Metal-IS Cd was more than 666 copies, I have it and I'm fairly sure that I would have had a harder time getting it if it was only 666 copies.

Never heard running free and sanctuary with steve on vocals.

Only Running Free has Steve doing vocals, not Sanctuary. Just click on the video it will take you straight to the song.

This is a compilation of the Soundhouse tapes and other various recordings. Hell, we don't even know if it's Iron Maiden even doing that Running Free version. Just somebody on youtube It's a rather bad performance, so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't Iron Maiden playing at all, but a fan recording claiming to be Maiden. Besides, any time Steve has sung he has done so by yelling in chest voice, and not a weak and cracking mixed voice like here.

Ahhh. Well im now thinking that is fake. He doesnt sound as steve harris singing. Even a young steve harris

I find it quite distressing that people are seriously considering that the band playing Running Free there could be Maiden. This has to be one of the worst all-round covers I've ever heard. Nothing there is right.
