The Longest Day, nearly a great song until.....

I like this song, quite a lot, but it is not my favourite song, or even in my top three, from AMOLAD.

Only For The Greater Good Of God is weaker than The Longest Day. Some great ideas badly developed, turning it into one of the most dull Maiden songs, but at the same time it's amazing Bruce's voice on this song and on this album, and Nicko's drumming, too.

I love this song and really dig the transition from the very tense opening to the pre-chorus and chorus.

This is another AMOLAD tune though where Bruce was just at the edge of his range, and therefore really didn't work too well live.  In my opinion of course.

in all i think the longest days a great song, i could go to saying its my favourite song from iron maiden along with many from AMOLAD
The main reason i love the longest day is the storyline in the D-Day landlings (im a sucker for those war tracks wether its the more gung ho aces high or run to the hills kind or the darker paschendale, longest day), nothing sends shivvers down my spine like 'blood and sand we will prevail' especially before Bruce comes in with that explosive voice, he has a passion in his voice that i cant find anywhere else in metal        maybe from his stint in the TA? (in regards to this song)
hmmmm, might get pipped at the post in my mind by paschendale though    B)

I agree, I think the song would sound better with some lead-melody or something instead of the endless repetitions. My favorite part(s) of the song is when Bruce voice changes from that dark and grim voice, and goes high and epic  :shred:

The song is perfect how it is. It's a masterpiece. I can't imagine how anybody could suggest changing any part of it because it was clearly crafted exactly how they wanted it to be (like every Maiden song really). How can you say the change to the chorus is awkward? It works perfectly with the lyrics:

"... a choking death, enter Hell's gates" This is the end of the first verse and you can feel the soldiers rushing off the ships and into battle.

"Sliding we go, only fear on our side" The smoothness and faster pace of this part makes sense because it fits the motion of the battle as they charge forward.

"How long on this longest day, 'till we finally make it through?" This is a little more powerful and brutal than the pre-chorus, which fits the clashing of the soldiers.

I think this video proves my point better than I could describe anyway:

Apart from repetition I don't see anything wrong about the chorus. It's a pretty good song - it's just not among the best of the album.

I agree with the OP.  The verses are fantastic, but the chorus takes a huge bite out of the atmosphere and pace.

Songs should've gone

Verse 1 / Pre-chorus / Verse 2 / Pre-chorus / Chorus / Instrumental / End

I only find the chorus at the end unnecessary. The pre-chorus/bridge is brilliant and the song is as atmospheric as they come on AMoLaD.

It used to be in my top 5 Maiden songs but I've got a little bored of it now. Still only Greater Good and These Colours could be better than it off of AMoLaD.

For The Greater Good Of God
The Longest Day
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns

This is the Holy Trinity of the album.

For me its got to be;
1. For The Greater Good Of God
2. The Longest Day
3. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
      :edmetal:

(even though my girlfriend was trying to persuade me to add different world and out of the shadows to the list )

Back to the subject of the Longest Day chorus... I like it, but I'll agree it is by far the weakest section of the song.

The atmosphere built by the first four stanzas (thru "enter hell's gate") is one of the finest bits on the entire AMOLAD album, though.
