The Future

My best mate has just had a baby boy, and I couldn't help wandering what the future holds for him when he reaches middle age.I'm not sure whether to be excited for him, or feel sorry for him.

I can see increased conflict between Christianity and Islam leading to goodness knows what.

Land currently populated, now starting to diminish due to climate change, which will eventually lead to mass migration putting pressure on areas already populated.

Sterilisation to curb population growth because of food & water shortages

Increased incidents of disease like the ones that swept Europe during the middle ages, due to overcrowding.

Totalitarianism.Governments will have to stamp down hard on the population to remain in control due to increased unrest.

When he reaches 50, Elephants , Tigers, Gorillas, and a multitude of other animals will be a thing of the past, as will Rain Forests.

Medical advances may bring advantages, but if Human Life span increases, this will compound the issues listed above.

Biological warfare between two major countries anyone?

How about humans returning to the moon and the first human to walk on Mars?  Closer integration of the European continent, possibly of the North American one?  Breakthroughs in areas like genetics and environmental science; the ability to feed more people, and the systematic reduction or elimination of diseases like AIDS.

The future isn't always a bleak one, either.  I, for one, don't see biological warfare in the future.  Name two countries with that sort of power who are that opposed to each other.

Yes there may be space now, but what about in the future where some of it may be uninhabitable due to extremes in climate.Experts recon that large parts of Southern Europe will become too arid because of the heat, therefore would not be able to sustain a population.

I understand that Kansas became a dustbowl recently due to drought.

That's only if current trends continue.  And we may be able to halt or regress trends eventually.  Plus, as a species, we're highly adaptable to new conditions.

I know there is a lot of crowding in Europe-- but there is a ton of space in the USA.
And there's even more space in Canada. Much more.

@Kopfanatic: Seriously, people with such a bleak outlook find it just eats them up inside. Yes there is stuff to be concerned about, but there is also plenty to be optimistic about (as LC stated). If there is something you could do personally to buck the trend, do it - and you will find things aren't so bad. :)

Actually there isn't. Between Natural disasters (tornados, floods and hurricanes)  and space needed as an escape valve (read the SW for the NE's overcrowding), there really isn't THAT much room.

Hm, I dunno....  I guess it depends on what we mean by 'room'.  There is a lot of 'open' area around me, right in the rural midwest-- and by that, I mean there is a lot of area that is able to be developed.

There's a lot more than in Europe, or at least Germany, that's for sure.

And everyone knows what happens when Germany needs some living space.........

Thread over!

Hell, Antartica is practically deserted...... except for the penguins...... DON'T FUCK WITH THE PENGUINS!!!!!!

That was the coolest Bud Ice campaign ever! "Drink Bud Ice but... Beware of the Penguins!" Doobi, doobi, doo :D
