Songs that you didn't "get" until seeing them live

I was supposed to create a thread to discuss what Iron Maiden songs benefit the most from being played live... but I guess this is similar enough for me to post here ;)

I just wanted to say that the difference between the studio and live version of "Drifter" is night and day! When I listened to the 9-minute version of the song from Beast Over Hammersmith, it just came alive like no other of the band's songs I've heard before.

I beg to differ. It's not that absolute. Say, The Clansman, for example, is a good example for Bruce performing better and conveying the song's energy to the crowd live. And I also think that the studio version of SOTC is way better than live with Brucie.

A bit of an old thread, but it was already bumped and I couldn't resist commenting on this.  I say that whoever says that Bruce does The Clansman better than Blaze has not seen Blaze do the song live.  It's always the highlight of the gig, pretty much.  He doesn't put nearly as much energy into the studio version as he does live.

True, although I believe that some songs off Virtual XI would be well suited to Bruce's voice (Lightning Strikes Twice as the prime example).
I really want to see that live with Bruce.

2 Minutes to Midnight, Run to the Hills and Fear of the Dark

I "get" the songs in the studio too, and I have always liked them. But seeing them performing these in Oslo 08, I completely fell in love with these songs. I understand why they play Fear every tour. It's amazing live.

That version is the reason I vouch for Drifter so much. I just love the Hammy version.

My first concert was the Somewhere Back in Time tour and I had a couple of songs that I didn't really know/like until I heard them live. Rime and Powerslave both went from relatively unknown to being within my top dozen songs because of that concert. It also may have lead to Powerslave being my favourite album since that point in time.

Rock in Rio DVD changed my mind about a few songs that I thought they were good but live were transformed in classics.

The most obvious one is Sign of the Cross, I always thought it was a good song with an awesome instrumental but lacked something on the studio version. Now it's a Top 5 song for me.
The other one is The Clansman, and it was pretty much the same thing I had with Sign of the Cross, cool song but lacked power on studio. Oh and i 'discovered' the Dave's licks in that version, pretty cool lol.

I should mention Sanctuary and Lord of the Flies as well, never liked them a lot, but they're cool songs.

Sign of the Cross - well, I agree the live version from RiR is better than the studio version, but that is mainly due to the production of The X Factor. I like Blaze's singing on that song and don't really think Bruce adds that much to that particular song. Still, the RiR version just sounds better. Witnessing the song live would be magic, but I have my doubts they will ever play it again.

For me, Running Free is a good example of a song which is not that special on record, but very enjoyable live. Wasted Years also got a whole new dimension live (although I wouldn't say I didn't "get it" until then, I have always enjoyed it).

I wouldn't say that there are songs that I "didn't get" until hearing live, but there are definitely songs that I've learned to appreciate more since hearing them live.  Die with Your Boots on, Sanctuary and Murders in the Rue Morgue are good examples.

I'd have to say Revelations, which I always thought was a decent song, but not as blowaway as their other material.  However, after watching it on the Give Em Ed tour in 2003, and again on Ozzfest, I must say I was very impressed at how well it translates live.

Revelations is definitely a song that works better live.  It's too "quiet" on the Piece of Mind CD because of all the pauses built into the song that were clearly made for crowd participation in mind, but lacking it in the studio.

Dream of Mirrors comes to mind as the most obvious, No More Lies is another.  I found both pretty weak and boring on album, but stunning live.

On RIR DVD, Sign of the cross and Dream of Mirrors are ones that sounded so much better live. Also, revelations, you need the crowd to cheer when there are them pauses in Revelations.

But they aren't classics! The band could have played [acronym=Can I Play with Madness] CIPwM and [acronym=The Evil that Men Do] TEtMD instead.

*<ducks>

(I found an easier way to do the shorthand for acronyms.  The down side is that now everthing is highlighted)  ;) :D
