So, to what lengths would you go?

Well, we all have our quirks, and I respect a pursuit of knowledge, but this is a bit too quirky. Unless she has enough resources,it's time consuming to the nth degree. And I wonder if the taxi driver can keep his sanity and/or determination. This reminds me of Mr. Bean's holiday when Bean drove the whole night. And maybe riding an airplane ain't that bad.

THAT or she's afraid of planes, because they were not around when she was into her exploring and adventurous phase of life.  Like I said: "I'd hate to be ageist..."

Although it's certainly not the same (especially the cab part), my parents used to drive to India several times during the seventies to help my grandfather with his excavations. They drove by car from West Berlin through East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and deep into India. And back. They look back fondly on that and keep telling me stories, my favourite one probably being that they were stuck in India in '74 because all of the sudden, war broke out between India and Pakistan.

Not to mention, I can fully understand that idea to suddenly jump up and leave. I've had that desire several times, and one day, I'll do it. Although I'd probably rather take the train.

I think it's a funny but also nice story!

Guess everyone would like to have such an adventurous grandma (at least I would ;) )

My friends and I were going to do that in high school during one summer.  We wanted to travel from Hamilton, ON to Vancouver, BC through Canada (which is not direct like going through Michigan state) and going north to Edmonton as a step.  The trip would have been over 3700 km.  Once we calculated the cost of gas, we chickened out.

I'd still like to do it, tough.
