Inspired by one of the biggest longshots in the World Cup of Maidenfans, some new music from old band.
Before Metallica emerged, Y&T was the biggest heavy act working the San Francisco Bay area.
When hair metal started to explode, they lost some of their rough, sweaty bar-band edge to hairspray and scarves.
But at their early '80s best they occupied a spot somewhere between Back in Black and Screaming For Vengeance.
They continued to work as a live act, but stopped making records for about 20 years, until 2010.
With Facemelter they recaptured the sound of their glory years.
This is the album's opening track.

I didn't know Y&T before but I like this track. 8, maybe I'll check out more Y&T.

Y&T is a band that has somehow slipped completely off my radar over the years. Odd, because their 80's stuff used to get regular rotation on my turntable, with Mean Streak being my personal favourite album. Didn't know about the 2010 release, but at first listen, it sounds like classic Y&T, and how can that be anything but good...

Giving it an 8 at first listen, and I'm gonna check out the whole album...

I saw them live in 2004 at Arrow Rock Festival (and I think at some other festival as well) and I remember I was very impressed by the lead guitar.

Decent song! I need you check out some older Y&T as well. Just played Forever and Midnight in Tokyo.

Taker and mckindog, and other people who have one; what is your favourite album?

Yeah, I think I'd have to pick Mean Streak too, with Black Tiger a solid second.
Open Fire gives you a good taste of their live fury as well, and anyone who likes those three will like the new one, Facemelter.
There's no Midnight in Tokyo-style song on it, but it's heavy and solid right through. Blind Patriot is a real facemelter.

Buddy of mine saw them earlier this year in a club in Seattle.
He and his wife are sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot prior to the show with Facemelter cranked, when a guy pops up at their window and says "great music."
It was rhythm guitarist John Nymann. He stayed and talked about the band with them for 15 minutes before heading in to prepare for the show.
They also talked briefly with (band leader) Dave Meniketti after the show.

In my view Meniketti is a thoroughly underrated talent.
Real intense guitar player with good melodic feel (check out the solo in the above song as an example) and a great rock singer as well.

Interesting that neither of you mention Earth Shaker. According to wiki songs off that record make up an important part of the band's live shows.

Had you learned that on January 7, 2011, bassist Phil Kennemore died at the age of 57 after a short battle with lung cancer? He was the only constant member of the band -besides Meniketti- since its formation.

Thanks for the info, I'll see if I can appreciate a whole album (not sure because of the corny/commercial sounding song titles I sometimes see).

edit: right now watching --> Y&T - Open Fire - Live in Holland 2006
+ Pinkpop May 31, 1982 track: Black Tiger (Dutch TV) (great shots of people in crowd going nuts)

Earth Shaker has some good stuff — Rescue Me and Hurricane come to mind immediately.

And you hit on the biggest flaw of Y&T's career just by reading the song titles — the lyrics often stray into hair metal cheese and the music sometimes does as well.
If you can put that stuff aside though, you'll find some gems.
