Ancient Mariner
My pick is the short instrumental "Final Gates" by hard rock band Running Wild, written by bass player Jens Becker (who played with Running wild from 1987–1992, and now he plays with Grave Digger since 1997).

This song comes from the album Port Royal (1988) and you'll hear immediately the role of the bass throughout the whole track. Cool play and harmonies. I also like the eerie sounding rhythm guitars and you also you get two nice guitar solos.
Some of you may find it sound simple, but I think it's very effective.
Quite a melodic, dynamic and atmospheric piece.

Check it out, and play it loud!  :shred:

Never heard the track before but I'm glad I have.
Your take describes my first impression perfectly.

I've never heard of these guys, but this is a good tune. As I write, I'm checking out some other stuff of theirs, and it all has cool rhythm guitars (Raging Fire, Victory, The Battle of Waterloo), and the bass is out front the way I like it. Gonna explore some more...

Glad you like it guys!

I wanted to make a whole topic about them for a long time, but I'll already tell you that I find this the best period:

Port Royal (1988)
Death or Glory (1989)
Blazon Stone (1991)
The First Years of Piracy (1991) (re-recorded versions of songs from the first three albums, not mentioned in this post)
Pile of Skulls (1992)
Black Hand Inn (1994)

Victory is a good track but that album contains a drum machine as did later albums. I am less fond of that, it looses some of the edge of the previous efforts.

Running Wild reunited with an unknown lineup, new album called "Shadowmaker" will be released in April 2012.

HUH? I thought they did a farewell gig last year???

What a marketing stunt! Well, I am glad they still go on to be honest, but I hope they'll make a better record this time.

I'll check the line-up.

Apparently, Rolf wanted to record 2-3 songs for a best of album, but was so inspired that he wrote a whole album. Until he announces a lineup, I expect nothing. There's a big possibility that Rolf recorded everything by himself, in which case it will probably suck.
