Sorry Flash, taking a bit of atypical direction with this one.

The Tragically Hip is probably the most respected rock band in Canada. One of the things they are best known for here is the fact the rest of the world doesn’t seem to get them.
They aren’t metal or prog, but they are smart, heavy and capable of extraordinarily creative and varied stuff. Probably my favourite non-metal band and I am curious to read what you guys think.

This is a dark, atmospheric slow-build piece from the early ‘90s that perfectly sets the mood for one of singer Gord Downie’s trademark poetic lyrics — this one a metaphor for the crushing paralysis of guilt.

Pretty good. I might check out more Tragically Hip songs in the future. 8

This doesn't fit that well to my taste, I'm afraid. A bit too much repetition, kinda dragging without getting exciting.
I rather play Midnight Oil or other bands with "an edge" or good melodies.

@ Taker: You’re right of course, although given the love-em-or-hate-em nature of Rush, I’d bet the Hip could have a broader fan base in Canada.
@ Foro: I think after all this time I’m finally getting a handle on your taste; I thought that might be your reaction to that song. Also the Hip and the Oils ironically did some kickass Canadian gigs together, including one at a huge environmental blockade not far from where I live, nearly 20 years ago now.
@ Vap: here is a sampler if you are checking the band out a little more
— the catchy straight-ahead rocker Little Bones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPJ2rcYQC88
— one of their heaviest Fire in the Hole (I prefer the studio version, but couldn’t find a clip) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg01BU_S4zI
— Folk-tinged The Dire Wolf http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQryVQxQ ... re=related
— And the ballad Fiddler’s Green, written for Downie's sister after death of her infant son; one of the saddest songs ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoXM95Wy ... re=related

I can see why these bands performed together. Good combo. Never seen an Oil show unfortunately. :/ If there was one band I could choose to see a concert from it would be them.

I will still try out some other Hip songs.
