Queensryche Week on Maidenfans (July 6-12, 2009)

I second these awesome bands: Rush, Iced Earth & Judas Priest !
let them come  :ok:

@Cornfed: you really should check the first EP. Classic hardrock, with great music and vocals.

Rage For Order was a great album.  Probably, retrospectively, it doesn't get a lot of attention, due to the two very strong albums surrounding it.  It seems to be a little more 'polished' than the first two were, tho, I don't know if any one song stands out to me like some did on The Warning....tho, possibly, I Dream In Infra Red.

Which leads into Operation: Mindcrime.  Honestly, for a fourth album, and only their third full lenght album, this was a masterpiece.  I understand where some people may not like it as much, but it was (and is) one of my favorite all time albums.  Personally, I love the fast aggressive start to the album.  I like the way that, individually, most of the songs are outstanding, and when listened to as a whole, they tell a great story.  It was hard and aggressive, it had depth and made me think (not like Scenes From A Memory, but similar).  Originally, at 15 or 16, I was a bigger fan of side A, but as time has gone on, side B has really grown on me.  Breaking The Silence, I Don't Believe In Love, Eyes Of A Stranger...tho, Speak & Spreading the Disease are still my fav's.

Empire was a good album, but (IMO) seemed a departure from what they had been doing.  Def harder rock, and some really good tunes: Jet City Woman, Della Brown, Empire, but it was more 'commercial' than what they had done in the past.  I am more a fan of that album now, than I was when it first came out.  At the time, after Mindcrime, I had felt a little cheated by the album, cause I felt that it didn't improve upon what they had started.  Now, I can appreciate it for what it is: a solid album.

Promise Land, acutally, felt more like what I had expected from them.  It felt harder, and more of a follow up.  The song that always sticks out in my head, when I think of that album, is I Am I.  I haven't listened to it in a while, and had wanted to squeeze that one in, however I have had to do a lot of driving with no cd player.  If anyone hasn't given this one a whirl, give it a shot.

Unfortunately, after this one, I have no real feelings for the music.  I tried out Mindcrime II, but I just didn't get into it.  I know it should be good enough, but when I listen to the live performance, even the original Mindcrime material doesn't sound the same; the solo's aren't as full of emotion and feel, so I'd have a hard time recommending it to anyone.  The covers album seemed like a 'shark jump' to me; good tunes, but Best Of's and Covers albums always felt like death to me.

I have no info at all on the newest album.  I understand that it is a 'concept' album about war, written from stories of vets that have survived conflicts.  I'd imagine its very emotion filled, but I haven't heard a single song off of it.

IMO, Geoff Tate is one of the most under rated vocalists in any metal genre.  He has a great set of pipes on him; I even have some copies of xmas carols that he has sung.  If anyone hasn't taken the time to listen to him sing, check out the first 3 albums and see what you think-- its a worthwile investment of time and money.

Hey, you bet!  One other song, that SMX mentioned, Last Night In Paris really is a good tune.

Damn it, missed it. :( Oh well, the only thing I have is Operation Mindcrime I and II. I prefer I. That's a very good album as an entity, has a nice story line to it and all the songs are very coherent. Eyes of a Stranger is a great favorite. I will haveto pay more attention to the artist of the week threads.
