Priest v. Maiden

Sure, Maiden is good.... but they don't anything on Judas Priest. Sorry.

Well, Priest have done some good stuff, but the quality of their songs is somewhat uneven and you can find brilliant compositions alongside with really naff tracks. Although Maiden have also made crap songs, their great tracks outnumber them (whereas Priest have done about 50% of each).

Besides, Priest's lyrics are rather shallow compared to the themes Maiden are dealing with.

All it boils down to is that Priest is pretty good riff-based music with party-style lyrics, whereas Maiden has intricate melodies and thoughtful topics for their songs. I like Priest, but they're no match for Maiden.

Priest's approach to using two guitars, especially on harmony solos, probably had a slight bit of influence on early Maiden (although not necessarily very much). Even though I think of the two bands as peers, Priest reached headlining status sooner and helped Maiden by taking them on as an opening act on several early Maiden tours. Thus, Maiden is slightly indebted to Priest ... but that debt has long since been repaid.

At their best, Priest was close to the equal of Maiden; but Priest reached that point less often than Maiden did. But Priest was still very good, better than most other metal bands. They were the first metal band I got into. Although I discovered Maiden very quickly after Priest, I'll always have a soft spot for Priest because "Screaming for Vengeance" was the first metal album I ever bought.

Screaming For Vengeance is my Priest favourite, and the first one I bought of them. Not my first metal record though. My memory's a bit hazy, but I think it might have been AC/DC's If You Want Blood when it was first released. Priest is VERY overated.
But I don't hate them they have good songs too. I hope they'll have a big come back with Rob back but in my opinion was Tim better.

1. You think Judas Priest is overrated.
2. You think Tim Owens is better than Rob Halford

You're insane.

IMO, Priest is a good band, is really powerful..
But they cant be measured with Maiden. I know I'm a fan... but Maiden is greater than any other band.

I love both but IMO I'd say Maiden is better but Maiden is my favorite band so it's a little biased of an opinion.

Priest is Priest and they're one of the best metal bands of all time. While the song writing wasn't as serious as Maiden was (Eat Me Alive anyone) they still had many great songs even if they didn't have very much of an important point to them. They paved the way for metal and deserve credit for that even if you don't like them.

Amen, brother. If the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame had any sense at all, Sabbath and Priest should both have been inducted by now by virtue of their influence alone.

Unfortunately, the R&R Hall Of Fame was a good idea that turned into a corporate rock joke the minute it became reality. But I will recommend visiting the Hall's museum in Cleveland should you ever pass through that city; it's got a lot of cool memorabilia to check out.

Not that I think they'll actually ever get in, but Maiden will be eligible for the Hall in 2005.

I WOULD HAVE TO SAY PRIEST ARE BETTER!!!
BOTH BANDS WENT THROUGH SIMILAR EVENTS WHEN THEY LOST THEIR HIGHLY PROLIFIC LEAD SINGERS.
I HOPE THAT PRIEST GET JUST AS MUCH HYPE AND ATTENTION ON THEIR IMPENDING COMEBACK!

MAIDEN APPEARED TO BE EVEN BIGGER WHEN BRUCE RETURNED (THEY PLAYED EARLS COURT IN LONDON FOR GAWDS SAKE!!!)

IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHERE THE 'REAL' FANS WERE DURING THE BLAZE/RIPPER DAYS (ALTHOUGH NOT ON THE SAME LEVEL, I THOUGHT THEY WERE GREAT ALBUMS/GIGS). ONLY A FEW HUNDRED FANS ATTENDED THE VIRTUAL XI TOUR AT GLASGOW BARROWLAND IN 1998.
THE PRIEST SHOW AT BRIXTON IN 2001 WAS SUPERB, AND SAXON SUPPORTED!!! (CHECK OUT THE DVD FOR PROOF).

ALTHOUGH I LOVE MAIDEN, PRIEST STILL CLINCHES THE TITLE OF BEST HEAVY METAL BAND EVER!!!!(PERIOD).

AND NO...ALTHOUGH THEY ARE HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL, SABBATH ARE NOT THE GREATEST!

I never said they were, although in my personal opinion they were very good. I simply meant that their influence shouldn't be ignored. Any band with that much influence has to be very good to exert that kind of effect.

If you ask me the best metal bands ever:
1. Iron Maiden
2. Metallica up to the black album
3. Judas Priest
4. Black Sabbath

After that it gets harder to say. [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Well, I have to admit I wasn't quite honest when I posted this topic - I actually don't like Priest much at all; I just wanted to see if I could strike up a bit of Maiden fan pride. But no, everyone stayed pretty calm, and not only that, some authentic Priest fans even made an appearance, hehe.
What a decent congregation of metalheads we have here, huh?
Now then, in all honesty, I do think Priest has some relatively good stuff, but as most have already pointed out, it's not too abundent, not nearly as abundent as Maiden's quality material in any case.
You know, even if every song that Maiden ever wrote had turned out mediocre -- but with the Rime of the Ancient Mariner tucked in there somewhere -- then just on the basis of that song alone, they'd still be metal gods. Same goes for Phantom of the Opera. Hell yeah
So um, yeah. up them irons.

And as for the person that proposed fighting over Iced Earth... let's go for it, I love that band. What are other people's thoughts?? Perhaps a new topic posting would be good for this.

All I can say is that Judas Priest is the better live band while I prefer Maiden in the studio! [!--emo&:lmao:--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/lol.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'lol.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Dude, while those aren't bad songs, Priest has much better, such as:
Hellion / Electric Eye
Screaming for Vengeance
Freewheel Burning
Victim Of Changes
The Ripper

Maybe it's just because I've played Living after Midnight and Breaking the Law in bar bands so many times, but I'm personally tired of those two songs. [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

You're not the only one.

Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight and You've Got Another Thing Comin' are all great songs but have been overplayed and are not close to the bands best material. I'll take anything off of Defenders of the Faith over those 3 anytime.

YEAH!!!

COULDN'T AGREE MORE!

'DEFENDERS' IS THE BEST PRIEST ALBUM!!!

'THE SENTINEL' IS PHENOMENAL.

THERE'S ALSO THE EXCELLENT 'ROCK HARD RIDE FREE' WHICH IS VERY UNDER- RATED.

IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT IT FINALLY MADE IT'S WAY ON TO THE REMASTERED 'PRIEST LIVE' CD AS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL ENCORES.
