I think Peavey Wagner and Mr. Rolf are the best power metal influence ever, and they never made it to US shores. What a passion for life. Do you think Running Wild has shifted from pirate metal?

I have NEVER heard of ANY of the bands mentioned above... except for grave digger acually. But I will say that Power metal is my cup of tee. I recently purchased Edguy's Theatre of Salvation and burned Hellfire's club and I dig it A LOT.

I do like power metal, just none of those bands [!--emo&:P--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Power metal is alright, but certainly not my favourite genre. I've listened to bands like Blind Guardian and such quite a bit, but I've grown out of it recently. Other types of music have taken my interest.

Trapped and Missing Link - RAGE [!--emo&--]/headbang.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'headbang.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I'll keep in mind thanks. I wouldn't call Blind guardian power metal, they fall under speed. Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Edguy, Hammerfall... to mention a few. THAT is power metal. The eunich vocals usually give it away which neither maiden (air-raid siren) nor Blind Guardian (every single key on the scale... great vocalist) has. sound is also a key, Power metal is very upbeat/happy and never fails to put you in a good mood. Anywho, just an opinion, nothing more.

Power metal is in my opinion one of the best categories out there. Especially HammerFall and Sonata Arctica(which someone would call speed metal) are awesome bands. I like the brighter vocals and cool riffs. Know that's not a good description of why, but it's the best I could do [!--emo&:P--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

add power speed and madness you get Labyrinth [!--emo&--]/bowdown.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'bowdown.gif\' /][!--endemo--] [!--emo&--]/bowdown.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'bowdown.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Masterplan anyone? Lost Horizon? Dream Evil? Secret Sphere? Stratovarius?

And yes, I know a couple of those bands are a bit proggy, but it's still power metal and still bloody good [!--emo&:)--]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Still, I've listened to so much tra-la-la power metal for the past 6 months, I've been getting the urge to listen to some good ol' agressive stuff again. Seasons change.
Blind Guardian's old stuff is certainly speed metal, but give a listen to Nightfall in Middle-Earth and you'll find plenty of power stuff. As for Helloween, I've only listened to some of their early stuff, and it sounded like good 'ol fashioned thrash (well, not so much the good). Don't actually know if they changed their sound somewhere down the line.

Also, newer Iced Earth ranks as power metal. Fantasy/religious themes, operatic style, and plenty of power ballads. The fact that they don't sing about Tolkien or have shitty keyboard trumpets (Freedom Call, how I hate thee) doesn't make them any less power. They certainly aren't upbeat and happy, and they don't give me the impression of a bunch of kids running around throwing sticks at each other while yelling "magic missile," but if Helloween can reportedly be power, then certainly Iced Earth can be.

Very True. Nightfall just flat out kicks ass, but I find the sound very... Medieval. Anywho, as for Helloween, the MUST HAVES and MUST LISTEN TO are Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and II, Time of the Oath and Better than Raw. Unfortunately Helloween makes a great record (sometimes two) and then sub-par stuff for the next ten years. Edguys Theatre of Salvation has a very "Keepers" ring to it. Hammerfall is practically an Early Helloween Clone. Kai Hansen's "new" project Gamma Ray is pretty good. I only own Land of the Free but I've read several reviews that from that cd on they improve dramatically.

This is good advice. [!--emo&--]/headbang.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'headbang.gif\' /][!--endemo--] RAGE kicks ass(!) and Running Wild has some good stuff as well. Grave Digger too (yeah, I like all 3).

Hmm...power metal doesn't always have to be happy flower metal just because Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica do it. I consider power metal to be relatively fast and melodic metal, often with over-the-top choruses (or all-around over-the-top music).

Well, fantasy stuff like...oh... RHAPSODY [!--emo&:D--]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--] I like in small doses, specially rhapsody because their lyrics are so...well...gay. I can't really enjoy music that makes me laugh unintentionally. But every six months or so I don't mind a dosage of cosmic landscapes and winged unicorns [!--emo&:D--]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Onhell, I agree with you about the silliness of Rhapsody's lyrics but I can't help but reflect on the evolution of the adjective "gay".

For hundreds of years, the meaning was "merry", "cheerful". Then it meant -- for some obscure reasons -- "homosexual" (mainly male) during the late 80s until today. And now, when this adjective is found in a post on a forum, it is quite pejorative...

Can anybody explain? [!--emo&--]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

well what are rhapsody lyrics? "Merry, Happy" maybe TOO happy lol. Seriously though, I used to know the words evolution... I guess I'll have to look it up again.
