I'm not denying that Rock has had a great deal of influence on Metallica, or that a change in producer could be good. But ultimately, the producer works for the band. And if the members of Metallica like Rock's work, then all they would do is find someone who would fill the exact same role.
A slightly more useful suggestion would be to give Metallica a list of other good producers who they should consider working with. I myself wouldn't try to put such a list together because I don't especially pay attention to who produces what albums, but I'm sure there are people here who know their metal well enough to come up with a good list.
A much better petition would be one which told Metallica what we like, and what we don't want to hear anymore. Bring back the guitar solos and get rid of the tin-can drums. Forget the touchy-feely St. Anger-style lyrics and bring back the kind of lyrical intelligence we saw on
Puppets and
Justice. As artists, it's Metallica right to play what they like - but OTOH, the millions of fans who would probably agree with those 2 sentences above aren't likely to be wrong. Most people don't want to hear a clone of
Puppets; we still want to be pleasantly surprised, and I at least think Metallica's spirit of experimentation has a good side. But fer crying out loud, if you're going to call your band
Metallica, you should at least play something that more closely resembles
metal.
