This one may be a bit shallow, but I just want to assure the three readers of you that I'm still planning on continuing this series.
Wizard - Torture and pain, his destiny's end for all eternity
If a band is labelled as "Epic Power Metal" on the Metal Archives, you know you're in for a treat. If you like cheese, that is - and as most of you will know by now, I kind of am into cheese. And if the band is called "Wizard" and has album titles such as Battle of Metal, Bound By Metal and Head of the Deceiver, what can go wrong?
Pretty much everything, actually. I have had the pleasure of sorts to see this band from Hamburg, Germany, live once. At one point, their lead singer, Sven D'anna, apologised for his poor performance that day by saying that the night before, he had been partying at his place, and the Jackie was so yummy, and he wasn't even sure if he'd make the gig because only a few hours before, he'd been puking around his flat. Yum.
So now that it has become clear what kind of band we are dealing with, let me just say that Wizard is something like the dumb version of Majesty, who, as some may recall, are the dumb version of Manowar. Years ago, I actually quite liked the band, and then forgot about them. One night not too long ago, I recalled that their album, Odin, had a few nice atmospheric tracks and I put it on, only to learn the lesson once again that some things are better in memory.
If I was to choose one single word to describe Wizard, their image and their music, it would be "goofy". Of course, Wizard are far from the only band having songs consisting of almost nothing but a chorus. But it does not really say very much in their favour if this track, March of the Einherjers, is their best song. If you want to know how goofy metal can be, listen to The Powergod. Even the tacky guitar riffs in the intro make me laugh! Not to mention that this track is only on the nine-hundredth concept album about Odin.
So, if we make our way through album covers depicting severed heads on bloody battlefields and song titles such as Heavy Metal Will Never Die or Our Hate Will Burn You, is there actually anything good to say about this band? Let's say that their album, Head of the Deceiver, is not half bad. It has its moments. But other than that, I just think this band deserves attention because anyone should see how cheesy, tacky and goofy a True Metal band can be. Can it even get any worse than this?
Well, actually...
