I became a fan of 'Maiden right before they began issuing The First 10 Years back in 1990.
It was only a few years later that I began collecting all of the original 7" singles etc.....
So, I got to know the live versions of Drifter and I've got the Fire from the First 10 Years cd before ever hearing the original 7". What immediately struck me about the original was the very different mix of Drifter. I haven't heard it for a long time but I seem to remember that Di'anno launches straight into the second chorus. What also stood out was the insane member in the crowd shouting "Yeahhhh, Iron Maiden, wuhooooooo" at the end of the side
Plus if memory serves me correctly you can just about hear "See you tomorrow" just before the opening bars of I've got the Fire begin.
Some very strange editing going on there.
Some of the content of the original B-side Drifter did not appear on the version from The First 10 Years but they are ultimately the same recording I think?
