Olympic Games 2014 - Gay intolerance ahead of and during(?) the event

I wasn't sure if this could fit in the Gay Marriage thread so I opened a new topic.

Some of you surely must have heard about the anti-gay law which according to some Russian politicians will stay in effect during the games. Now, their number one sport icon (pawn of Putin?) has openly spoken out in support of this law:

"... Everyone can participate, everyone can compete, but of course if they will promote sexual relations outside in the street it won't be respectable for a lot of our citizens because we are all, from inside of us, against it. ..."

All against it? That's a naive and wrong statement. OK, the majority is against it, but does that mean that a minority should be silenced?

I wonder how the sport community will deal with this.
