I don't know if I ever made clear here that I have absolutely no positive opinion of genre whores- i.e. people who stuff music into boxes labelled "Progressive Melodic Death Metal" or "Power/Speed Metal" etc. for whateve reason at all. To me, music is music- no matter what you call it. I'm never going to say "I feel like Symphonic Dark Power Metal". Instead I'd say things like "I feel like some Maiden" or things like that. At worst, you'll find me saying "I want to hear some Heavy Metal" now- and I lump pretty much into that.

Still, today I found a BBC ad on my Yahoo page, which I wanted to share with you. I'm transscribing it (it was a picture), and it's exactly like it said there.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC?

Dance Classics
Dirty House
Dubstep
Electro

Hard Dance

-End

What the fuck? Not only does this list completely ignore almost any type of music I like (and, yes, it simply is Hard Rock and Heavy Metal), but it also lists genres that are either completely identical (Rap and Hip Hop or Dirty House and Hard House), and others I simply have never heard of. And of course, any type of Classical Music is ignored too.
This is an aggressive ad, and it does not speak to me at all! This kind of stuff just angers me.

I don't even know why I'm posting this.

Now there's one genre I've never heard of! But I bet it's shit. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

I've very much of the same opinion though. I'm not bothered about putting music into genres, mainly because it's too diffcult to classify most music. However, it can be useful for getting into new bands that you might not necessarily listen to otherwise.

Genres are perfect for orientation, but that's where the line should be drawn. Genre distinction is almost becoming like nationalism by now...

Possible Explanation I - In British (Real) English, perhaps those terms don't mean exactly what you think they do.

Possible Explanation II - It's an ad, and not meant to be read closely. You're supposed to click on it and visit the site it leads to, without reading too much into it.

Possible Explanation III - The list is based on the BBC's market research; they are purposely targeting the people who tend to listen to music regularly put into those genres.

Possible Explanation IV - The list is supposed to be representative, not definative. Those categories are a cross-section of all their precieved genres.

Possible Explanation V - The BBC is personally out to piss you off. They're still mad at Germans and are getting revenge kraut by kraut. You are the 45,235,007th German to be offended by the BBC; only 37,196,383 to go!

Unlikely.

You were supposed to click on an individual genre.

I doubt there are so few people who listen to anything Metal-related if Maiden can make no. 2 in the UK charts.

Still, that doesn't explain the absence of Metal.

I dare them to piss me off again.

I hope so!

I've seen this ad on Weebls-Stuff. It's an ad for BBC Radio 1, so it could mean they don't play metal. I think they do play metal though, just look at the number of "Rock"-stations. I don't think they make a special Metal program like the Bruce Dickinson Rock show. I don't listen to BBC Radio 1 so I can only guess but on Bruce's "Rock" show they play Blues, Rock and Metal just because if you like one of those you wouldn't mind hearing something different in between, that's what I think radio is.

I've seen this post on MaidenFans. It's an annoying post that doesn't really mean anything, so it could mean that Bunkle does't know how to write an attractive, meaningful post. I think he does have the potential to write attractive, meaningful posts, though, just look at the number of posts he made. I don't think Bunkle is unable to write an attractive, meaningful post. I don't pay much attention to what Bunkle has to say, as his posts are usually structured in a way that you simply don't want to read them, but I know that he's writing about life, the universe and everything, just because if you like one of those you wouldn't mind reading something different in between, that's what I think a forum is.

@ Perun - Britain is not a hotspot for metal in general so the most popular "music" radio station (I use the term "music" loosely here) is unlikely to play anything that isn't popular.

@Bunkle - Bruce's show is on BBC Radio 6

@Mav - Don't be such a contentious git all the time [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

Rap and Hip-hop ARE NOT the same... sorry had to say it. I once thought (wrongly) that they were but they are not. However the difference is a secret, I can't tell you, Talisman must reveal it to you and if He chooses not to... Well you are screwed. Not to mention His prophet, Sting, has retired, so you are out of luck my friend.

Also... Learn to LET GO! I don't know why you're posting this either, if i posted about every single tv/magazine ad that just got on my nerves I would get kicked off.

This is what we get for voting a German into power...

Edit: Hmm, post 3000. Only took 3 years.

Well, I know they are not the same, but the difference is so minimal that it doesn't play any role to me. Just like the difference between Heavy and Thrash Metal plays no role to me.

Stuff like that normally passes me completely, but this one simply angered me. I was supposed to choose something I like from a list of stuff I can't stand. I've done that a bit too often lately. It's not about the ad, but about that mentality in general. I go to the supermarket with a friend, we stand in front of the beer shelves and he says "pick one". Should I say "I can't pick, they're all terrible!"? I'm standing in front of a horrifically dull list of proseminars for my next term at the uni and I'm supposed to pick one. The best sleep? I am supposed to go to the elections and elect a government from six criminal parties? What's next? "Pick your favourite state of health: AIDS, Cholera, Stomach Tumour, Creutzfeld-Jacob, Spanish Flu"?
