KISS will be hitting the studio in March to begin work on a new album, according to guitarist Tommy Thayer.

“The great news is that we are going in the studio again in the next month or two,” Thayer told BackstageAxxess.com during the recent NAMM convention. “We are starting to work on writing some songs now, and we’re gonna really approach it a lot like we did with "Sonic Boom," and keep it all in the band in terms of the writing, with no agenda besides writing great rock and roll songs that we love, then rehearsing them and then going in and putting them down on tape and recording them. Just the way we did with the last record, which really felt good to us, so we're gonna go do it the same way this time.”

2009's "Sonic Boom" was the band’s first studio album in more than a decade. Vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley produced that album, and he will perform the same duties on this one.

“Paul knows more what a KISS record should sound like than anybody, to be honest with you, so he is going to lead the charge and produce it again and we are all really excited about it,” Thayer said. “I know we are going to start working on it really soon in terms of the writing and rehearsing and we’ll probably be in the studio by March, so sometime this year I’m sure you’ll see a brand spanking new KISS album that’s gonna kick some butt!”

I will certainly be buying this one. Sonic Boom sucked but it's always fun to hear a new KISS album.

I am hoping for an improvement over the last album ... sounded way too much like their 80s output.  Also still pissed about the two guys wearing Ace and Peter Criss' makeup ...

Well I tend to ignore that when listening to the album but you're right. I thought it sounded too much like an attempt at remaking Destroyer. (the album sucked, why would you want to remake it) And I like their material without makeup a lot and I hope they make another album like that. But judging by the interview they probably won't.

Agreed. I thought the last album was throwaway. Without Frehley and Criss, the greasepaint should have been shelved. The milking of the classic image of this band by Stanley and Simmons saddens me.

Sonic Boom was a Sonic Bust! Having Eric and Tommy dress like Ace and Peter is in bad taste, but it really pissed me off when they had Tommy sing Shock Me on the Tour! I like Eric and Tommy but they shouldn't sing Ace and Peter's songs. Give them their own identies or ditch the Makeup. I've seen every tour since the Hot In The Shade tour and this last one was the worst! I would like to see Bruce Kulick come back. I know Ace won't. The last album with Bruce was a great hard rocking album. Revenge was the best thing in years! I would've like to seen what they could've done for their next album.

Yea that was stupid when they did Shock Me. Out of all the things KISS has done that was the ultimate disrespect. That's like having Eric sing Beth. Oh wait, they did that too. Bruce is a killer guitarist and Revenge is easily my favorite KISS album. I really wish KISS would decide to leave the past in the past and continue moving forward like they did in the 90's. They had something really good going there and they ruined it. What a waste.

The biggest problem, is they only notice what the Critics think. The critics loved Sonic Bullshit because it was a sell out. The critics hated the Elder. But Gene and Paul loved it, the fans loved it, and Bob Ezrin loved it. The critics hated it and Gene believed it was a bad album. They need to learn how to respect themselves as artists and put out something great.

A great example of how to handle a re-union in the long term (Maiden) and how not to (Kiss).

Eric Singer is a better drummer than Peter Criss. Don't know about the singing, I only know some basic KISS songs with Paul Stanley on vocals.

I don't know, Singer is probably a better techinical drummer .. but Criss put a certain "swing" in the songs that made them stand out (also a much better singer than Singer IMO).

Well Peter has a jazz/big band background where Eric is more metal. For classic KISS (which is what they're doing now) Peter is the way to go. But for Revenge era KISS Eric is a great drummer. Really brought new energy to the band after Carr died.
