Need some advise

Anomica

Trooper
I commute to work and it's about 1 hour and 45 minutes which is perfect for my 128-meg MP3. I've found that a really good way to wake you up at 6.30 in the morning is by listening to some great music ^_^ and I have a decent playlist running. I need some advise on a few of the songs though. I believe that my taste will be evident by the choice of songs ;) So, any and all ideas and recommendations are welcome in order to make it a good mix (Maiden only at the moment, please). So far, I'm pretty pleased with some of the songs, especially the slightly softer section with DoD, DoM, ID but I need some other great songs.

Paschendale
Moonchild
Brave new world
Brighter than a thousand suns
Dance of death
Dream of mirrors
Infinite dreams
Be quick or be dead
The evil that men do

Fear of the dark
Montsegur
Different world
The Clairvoyant
The reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
I've got the fire
A cover of Thin Lizzy (name forgotten)

The songs in italics are the ones I'm not so sure about and would like to swap for something better.
Thanks for your help -_-

Massacre ;)

My "advise" to you would to broaden your horizons.  Listen to artists other than Maiden.

You haven't seen my collection, Conor, but I'm into a Maiden period at the moment ;) and want to find some songs I haven't got into yet.
Other things you might find in my collection are Jeff Healey, Omar & the Howlers, Crowded House, Glenn Miller, Mozart...I think my horizons are broad enough -_-

Oh, well in that case, I would say to buy every album from the start and listen to them all until you find your own favourites ;)  One word of "advise" would be to give each and every song a good listen and not cast them aside after one listen.

I have to admit, it is very rare I make a compilation myself, I tend to listen to albums in their entirety rather than cherry pick. That said, to offer some advice would be to get some older Maiden stuff in that (pre Seventh Son). Maybe chuck in a Powerslave, Where Eagles Dare or a Killers - but don't overlook the Blaze stuff or Perun will haunt you forevermore. ;)

Keep The Evil That Men Do and The Clairvoyant for now.  I would drop Be Quick or Be Dead and add in either Murders in the Rue Morgue, Phantom of the Opera or The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  You clearly like your long, epic, songs (Dream of Mirrors, Paschendale, Dance of Death), so don't ignore 7th Son or Alexander the Great, either!  If space is an issue, with all these long tracks, try a shorter one; Prowler and Wrathchild are some choice Di'anno cuts.

Sign Of The Cross
Lord Of The Flies
Man On The Edge
Fortunes Of War
Look For The Truth
The Aftermath
Judgement Of Heaven
Blood On The World's Hands
The Edge Of Darkness
2 A.M.
The Unbeliever

There you go, perfect playlist

I'd add, for a 2-CD limited edition "compilation":
Justice Of The Peace
Judgement Day
I Live My Way
:P

Throw in Virus and the live version of Afraid To Shoot Strangers with Blaze on vocs and you've got a deal!

When I heard Blaze do ATSS, I actually thought he did a better job than Bruce. Simply speaking, he gave it a bit more passion.

I think there's a thread on that down in the Fear Of The Dark forum.

In any case, I agree ;)

I threw this out as a way of seeing the differencies in musical tastes so I thank you for your contributions. I've been listening to Maiden since 1982 and own all their studio albums, except Virtual XI and The X-factor. There are a few good songs on those albums, Futureal and Clansman spring to mind, but I have a problem with Maiden songs sung by anyone other than Bruce. That's why I never really fell for the diAnno-albums either. The songs are indeed really good, but I prefer them live with Bruce's voice :-[

There where actually 2 albums I hadn't really got into properly, BNW and SSOASS, and BNW I've discovered is indeed one of their 3-4 best albums. SSOASS doesn't really hit me in the right spot, though. There are a few great songs, but... (Swearing in the church, perhaps?) ^_^

ROTAM is usually a given on my mp3 since I think it's IM's best song ever, but due to limited space I removed it in favour of songs I didn't know as well. I usually put an entire album on to listen to, but sometimes I just make a kind of best-of compilation in order to really enjoy the music, really loud. The other passengers on the train, however, seem to find it unusual to hear that kind of music spilling out of the earphones of a 40-something (well, 39) but that's fun too. Or maybe they just want me to turn it down a bit, hey?

Last night, btw, I relived Gothenburg 2005 by watching the DVD from the concert. Phantom of the Opera and Remeber Tomorrow make me in awe - to be able to write such music while being as young as they were back in the late 70s/early 80s :o It's not simple or easy music, but it's still great almost 30 years later; that's what I call quality!

19 to be exact ;)

Personally no Maiden compliation is complete without The Wickerman.  Man the waiting and expectation was killing me when the band announced the return of Bruce and Adrian.  I wasn't aa part of the whole net world at the time and could only rely on radio and magazines but to be honest it one of my fondest memories, kinda like queing for tickets, flying to the gig, waiting in line...

So when The Wickerman hit the airwaves after an interview with Bruce on a local radio here in Australia, the cassette deck was recording and I was completely f*&$ing blown away.  Still love that song so much and it is always included on my Maiden compliations!

Anomica you go ahead with your compilations, I always spend the better part of a month with one of my favourite bands lurking about, getting a good chunk of airtime whether in the car or at home regardless of what's new or other bands I'm into at the time.  All era Maiden Queensryche Megadeth Charon amoungst others... always close to my stereo ;).

Waiting for A Matter of Life and Death is a matter of being too damn patient for most of us!  Me included! ;)

I sort of see where you are coming from here, but I have to admit that some of the DiAnno stuff was sung so much better with him. Somehow, stuff like Killers, Running Free, etc. is not quite the same with Bruce. Sorry, just my opinion.

Well, the only Iron Maiden tracks you miss are Alexander The Great and Face In The Sand

But that's my opinion :)

I agree with you, and if I listen to Maiden songs sung by Blaize, most of them are really good. It's just that to me, they're not Iron Maiden - it's a different band that looses some power and stuff that I look for in a Maiden song. Same with IM/Killers. Good songs, but not IM (to me).

i'm not a big fan of Blaze either...(sorry Blaze fans)

but try the Rock In Rio versions of Clansman, Sign Of the Cross....and the Death On the Road version of Lord Of the Flies...

they sound great with Bruce IMO
