I didn't see a "top 5 albums with reasoning behind them" thread so here we go.
Post your top 5 with your favorite tracks from it and not so favorites and reasoning behind your liking and disliking. Here are mine.
5. Number of the Beast - This was the third album I heard from them after discovering them back in 1999. It was the first old school sounding 80's album with out the synth sounds like I heard on SIT. "Hallowed be thy Name" was my favorite track on the album. I also loved "The Prisoner" and "Total Eclipse". I found "The Number of the Beast" to be good as well as "22 Acacia Avenue" but lacked my favorites. "Invaders and Run to the Hills" were kind of a naw for me. Overall, I give the album and 8 out of 10. I can tolerate "Invaders" but find the album the rest of the way through great overall.
4. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - This was the second album I came into contact with and found the album artwork awesome. I fell in love with tracks like "Infinite Dreams, Only the Good Die Young and The Evil That Men Do". "Can I Play with Madness" and "Moonchild" were good songs along with the epic "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son". "The Clairvoyant" is an awesome song in a strange way and "The Prophecy" is a good song too. I give this album an 8 out of 10. I felt this album was weaker musically than Somewhere in Time as it sounds softer and more prod rock than the heavy synths on SIT but lyrically I think it was better with a concept in mind.
3. Powerslave - This album is AWESOME! Pure metal! "Aces High" is an epic way to open an album and the epic journey continues with "2 Minutes to Midnight". The instrumental "Losfer Words" is awesome and continues with the awesome "Flash of the Blade" and "The Duelists". This album has a lot of power and not a weak song on the album. "Back in the Village" is a fun song but didn't strike me as good as the earlier songs. "Powerslave" is awesome to say the least. The lyrical theme is great and the rhythm is awesome. Dave's solo in the song is beautiful and Adrian's kicks right in with energy. Awesome! The album finishes off with Steve's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Over 13 minutes long and worth the listen all of the way through. I give this album a 9 out of 10. Overall, this thing is awesome!
2. Brave New World - My belief is this was the first classic album the band made since Seventh Son. It was my first tour experience. I saw them in 2000 for the first time. I LOVE this album! "The Wickerman" is a great way to open an album but my favorite track came afterwards with the awesome "Ghost of the Navigator". An awesome song with proper build up and a great story. "Brave New World" is just as awesome. This album has many songs that I can feel a connection to and it is great. "Blood Brothers" may be my least favorite on the album and I give it a 9 out of 10 so that says a lot about the whole album. "The Mercenary" is AWESOME! The song instantly nails you with energy and it carries all the way through. "Dream of Mirrors" is a lovely song with plenty of build up and it's a long one too. The live version sounds better IMO. "The Fallen Angel" is awesome too and another classic to me that sadly never made it live (to my knowledge). "The Nomad" is another Harris epic with a build up and lots of energy. "Out of the Silent Planet" is my 3rd favorite song but my 2nd is the final epic "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate". This song grew on me and became one of my favorite songs ever! This album gets a 10 out of 10! Worth every song!
1. Somewhere in Time - Ok. This album was the first album I ever heard and it seems like their forgotten album of the 80s and I cannot see why. The album starts off with my all time favorite track and IMO best opener of any Maiden album, "Caught Somewhere in Time". Damn this thing is epic from the second it starts to the second it ends with it's epic riffs and a mighty twin guitar attack in the middle. "Wasted Years" had me addicted after the first 20 seconds. The opening riff got me hooked and the whole song was great! "Sea of Madness" hit me in the face with the twin guitar opening riff and is awesome! The mid section is beautiful too. Loved Adrian's work on this album. The second Harris epic is the commercial sounding "Heaven Can Wait". I personally think if there was a half way weak track on this album, this is it. The mid section is cool but seems to commercial and may be played for audiences due to that section only. The next song "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is an epic. It starts off spiritual sounding and beautiful and then kicks you in the face with energy. The guitar work is changing a lot and the vocals go up and down. Awesome! "Deja Vu" is one of my favorites. The only track with Murray having writing credits for this album, it is awesome. The lyrics are great and vocals go deep and then really high which I found awesome. The riffs are awesome too! "Stranger in a Strange Land" is the third Smith track and has a cool feeling to it. The bass intro and guitar slam following is awesome. It doesn't have the standard speedy riffs and gallops of classic tracks but works very well with the synths. Once again, the middle section solo Adrian did is beautiful. "Alexander the Great" wraps up the album in a truly majestic way! This song is just epic beyond words although a little historically inaccurate. It's a shame this song never made it to a live show during Somewhere on Tour. I give this album a 10 out of 10. PERFECT. It's the one Maiden album that I can listen to from start to finish and think it's just flawless. I think the artwork is the best too!
This concludes my top 5. Thanks for reading and I hope I can read some of yours.
