Metallica/Apocalyptica

Infinite Dreamer
I feel I died and went to heaven!!!! I just saw Apocalyptica (TWICE!) and Metallica on one of only TWO U.S dates!!!! FUCK....YEAH! First I saw Apocalyptica headline their own show in Phoenix and it was amazing! It was a small venue and I was right up front. their set-list was good, with plenty of tracks from the new album with three metallica covers. They made a few jokes about their English not being that great which is true of Perttu's lol, but not Eicca's. Speaking of which Perttu is the one who has the most severe case of "rock star" out of the three, even the cocky attitude... could also be because he's the youngest... meh. So I saw them again in Tucson for KFMA Day, a rock festival held in Tucson every year, the last one I came to it was headlined by Korn like... 3 or 4 years ago. Their set-list had to be cut to an hour (they played almost 2 in Phoenix) so it was ok and since it was outdoors, the intimate atmosphere was non-existent. The REALLY cool thing about KFMA day though was that I got to meet them! Eicca and Paavo are really cool, Perttu as stated before is kind of cocky and snotty. As for Mikko, the Drummer, he seems to be happy just being there LOL. They signed my copy of "Worlds Collide"! WHOOT.

As for Metallica... Holy... Fucking...SHIT! They were AMAZING. The set list they played was a dream come true! in order of Album:

The Four Horsemen
Seek and Destroy
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Creeping Death
Call of Ktulu teaser (just the intro)
Battery
Master of Puppets in its entirety!
Blackened teaser (again, just the intro)
And Justice for all
One
Enter Sandman
Sad but true
The Unforgiven
Wherever I may roam
Fuel
The Memory Remains

I shat my pants... it was incredible... They are touring again in October for the new album so can't wait for that! Also, this was the largest concert in Tucson in the past 30 years! that means ELVIS in 76 was the biggest before this one! (nearly 50,000 people!

Really nice setlist from Metallica.  Wish they'd come to Scandinavia this summer, but no, and I missed their Finnish gig last year.

Sounds like a great gig! The first Metallica track you mentioned in that album-order setlist (from their debut album) has one of my favourite guitar riffs! *headbang smiley*

Master of Puppets in its entirety!

Battery is on Master of Puppets or do you mean the title track?

Well it can't be the whole album or it would've been an almost 3-hour set!  Though I'd like that :P

Speaking of Metallica, anyone looking forward to the new album or will it just be another St. Anger?

Wow... that setlist is amazing...

Except for the last 5 songs where it divebombs.  What a way to end the show!

Edit by SMX - took this post out of spoiler tags ... see my post below for why.

First of all, can we keep the spoiler tags to a minimum, please? They're annoying when you're trying to read a thread.
Please use spoiler tags only when you're actually naming a song, or saying something else so obvious that it would give a song away.

Second: the rule about spoiling set lists only technically applies to Iron Maiden as far as I'm concerned, though I'd like to hear what the other mods think. I see no problem with talking about this setlist openly - although I'll also use spoilers when needed until the forum reaches a consensus.

As to the last 5 songs - I like 4 of them very much. Only the very last song was weak, in my opinion.

Now here's an appropriate use of the spoiler tag...

I don't understand the people who think Metallica songs from their later albums are bad, with the obvious exception of the pile of crap called St. Anger. I think even Metallica themselves have realized how bad that album is, since they're not playing those songs anymore.

"Fuel" or "Wherever I May Roam" - I think those are both great, but I can understand someone else thinking less of them.

But "The Unforgiven" and especially "Sad But True" are among Metallica's best songs ever. Just because it's not mile-a-minute thrash like "Battery" doesn't mean it's inferior. Both have great lyrics, "The Unforgiven" has superb dynamics and the riffs in "Sad But True" are classic.

And @ Onhell - glad you had a good time, bud!

I don't see a reason not to use them when discussing other bands. Seriously, it's only polite.

I'm not a mod, but I would appreciate people still keeping setlists under spoiler tags.  A lot of my other favourite bands, such as Iced Earth, are also discussed here in great detail and I'd like to have the security of spoilers on them too.  And so far this has been done very well, which I am grateful for. :)

What I didn't understand was, did Metallica really play it all in chronological order or did you just list them like that?  If they did play like that, I think it's a bad decision.  I wouldn't like it coming even from Maiden, especially as it does create some predictability; once you've passed a certain album, you know what songs they at least won't play.

As for Metallica's later albums, I hate St. Anger, and dislike both Load and ReLoad (well, they're almost the same album).  The Black Album feels quite commercial, but it's sometimes nice to listen to.  Sometimes I can't stand it.  It does have its share of good songs, though.  I wouldn't mind them playing songs from the Black Album live, though I would prefer old stuff primarily.

@Foro... just the song
@SMX... thanks! it was quite the weekend!

I've come to appreciate Metallica's "later" stuff, there is plenty of stuff on Load and Reload that gets people pumped at concerts. I also put the setlist in spoiler tags because they are touring Europe and even though they changed it from when they played in California, I didn't want to ruin it for European fans.

Personally I haven't bothered to get the last 4 Metallica albums, but I do have some of the songs from these and they aren't that bad. Some songs, like The Unforgiven, The Memory Remains, and No Leaf Clover (from S6M) are really enjoyable. However, the songs I've heard from St. Anger aren't worth a lot. As far as I am concerned, they could as well have recorded half an hour of traffic noise and microphone feedback.

By the way, Invader: Metallica ARE in fact playing Scandinavia this summer. They play at Koengen in Bergen in July. But I guess it would be expensive to get there from Finland as there are no direct flights Helsinki-Bergen (you would have to change planes in Oslo). I'm not going either, although the trip is only one hour by plane. Going to see both Priest and Maiden here in Trondheim this summer - that's enough to make me happy. And the Metallica tickets are expensive as fuck as well ... almost twice the Maiden tickets.

My bad, but yes, I wouldn't go to Norway for Metallica.  I doubt I would go there for any band besides Maiden, but then, Maiden are doing two shows here both of which I'm attending, so there's no need.

Those Dutch have it lucky though... Priest and Maiden are both headlining Graspop festival, and there's even Iced Earth added into the mix!  I really envy Forostar.

HETFIELD: TRUJILLO Has Written More On New METALLICA Album Than NEWSTED Had In 14 Years

A five-minute interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield conducted yesterday (Wednesday, July 16) by VG TV at the opening show of the second leg of the band's European summer tour in Bergen, Norway can be viewed here. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.

On the title of METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic":

James Hetfield: "'Death Magnetic', at least the title, to me, it's… It had something to do with… It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [ALICE IN CHAINS] and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away. And the concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point. So that's kind of the subject matter."

On bassist Robert Trujillo's contributions to the new record and the band's overall sound:

James Hetfield: "I don't really have to say it, but I will — he's an amazing bass player; very competent. He can play pretty much anything we throw at him. Not only that, but obviously [Robert] playing with his fingers brings a fuller sound. He — and no disrespect to Jason [Newsted, Rob's predecessor in METALLICA] — but Rob has already written more on this album than Jason had in his whole 14 years. A lot of that had to do with us not being willing, and I totally understand that, but just his material seemed to gel better. It feels as though we've known him forever, basically, is what it feels like. And there's still times when I see him in pictures with us, and I go, 'Oh, yeah! He's in our band. Dude, we kick ass even more now.' It's a good feeling."

METALLICA has announced that every song on its upcoming album, "Death Magnetic", will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same date that the record arrives in stores, reports The Pulse of Radio. A post at the band's official web site stated, "It's a first in both music and gaming...The same day that 'Death Magnetic' hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for Guitar Hero III! We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release...Who knows?! Maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out."

The post added that "Death Magnetic" will also be available for the new World Tour edition of Guitar Hero, which is due out this fall.

Rumors of an all-METALLICA edition of Guitar Hero have been making the rounds recently, but the game's publishers have not confirmed this.

"Death Magnetic" is due out in September and was produced by METALLICA and Rick Rubin.

A deluxe box set edition of the album will be available in the U.S. The coffin box package will contain one CD featuring the album, another containing demos, a behind-the-scenes DVD, an exclusive T-shirt, a METALLICA flag, a collection of guitar picks, codes for a special live download and a poster.

The coffin box will only be available through Metallica.com, MetClub.com, and MissionMetallica.com.

Several other editions of "Death Magnetic" will also be offered for sale through the Mission: Metallica site, including an all-digital version and a high-end edition featuring five vinyl LPs and a lithograph.

METALLICA's next U.S. date is the one-day Ozzfest on August 9 in Dallas, with a full North American tour slated to begin in October.

I watched that interview. I think that although Hetfield says "no disrespect to Jason" it seems like he still doesn't rate Newsted very high ... I get the impression that at least for Hetfield, Newsted always was "the new guy" who had to be kept down. I think he leaves a bit of disrespect hanging in the air. But of course, he's not acting like mr. Schaffer of Iced Earth ...

By the way, the paper Bergens Tidende (the biggest newspaper in Bergen where the concert was) also had interviewed some "fans" on their way home afterwards. The first one said that she and her husband/boyfriend/whatever had come just to hear "One". I get the impression that "One" together with "Enter Sandman" is sort of Metallica's "Fear of the Dark" or "Run to the hills", the song that everyone have heard. Even though the band has many equally good, or better, songs. The opening three songs of the set, for example ...
