Time to talk about Megadeth, friends!

Next week: special selection by SMX
After that: to be determined by poll next week

I'm gonna go listen to the first Megadeth album now, so I can say something about it later...
Killing Is My Business ... And Business Is Good

Not a very good album. There are a few tasty riffs that show the potential Mustaine had, but that potential hadn't matured yet. And the production isn't very good, either.

The next album is much better...

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Funnily enough, I got into Megadeth before I got into Metallica - and it started with Peace Sells... The first thing I ever heard by Megadeth was "My Last Words" - sneaked in to Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show. Sneaked in, I say, because this particular show was meant to be a Valentines special. So amongst the slushy sounds of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, et al was an adrenaline pumping, fist clenching monster of a track. The next day, I bought the album.

As for the first album, I don't really play it that much. I have to agree with SMX, it certainly got better for 'Deth after this. According to the sleeve notes on Garage Inc., "Mechanix" (tagged the blueprint for "The Four Horsemen") was played by Metallica on their debut show. Interesting, if not pointless, bit of trivia. ;)

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Megadeth owns Metallica any day!

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

This is really becoming a "pick your American band"-week. Oh well, some of them are good.

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

I own a Mustaine plektrum.

Win.

But seriously, I was always more into Megadeth than Metallica and recently I've gotten more into their stuff. For right now I'd say my favorite album is Youthanasia but that changes as you can imagine. What else to say about Megadeth? I guess what I like best about them are their lyrics and as well as that Mustaine comes up with some wonderful riffs occasionally. Not my favorite band, but very decent.

I wanted Dio.

Anyway, I listened to Rust In Peace.  Which has some of my favourite Megadeth songs, but has a couple stinkers too.  My favourite songs from the album are Hangar 18, Rust In Peace... Polaris, and Lucretia.  But I really don't care for either Take No Prisoners or Five Magics.  So, it has great peaks but isn't very consistent in my view.  7/10.

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Dio himself is American, but he has done so much time with Brits that I think his style is a unique hybrid of the two nations.

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Well, most of the time (if not all the time) Dio's band has consisted of at least half of Americans.

There's nothing wrong with Americans per se.

It's just that I personally like way more European bands than American bands.

I guess I like about 50+ European bands and when I look at North America I really dig

Rush
Iced Earth
Dio
Saga
Virgin Steele
Solitude Aeturnus
eighties Queensryche
early Metallica
a couple of Slayer albums
some Eidolon albums (but this is not a big enough band to participate)
some Steel Prophet (but this is not a big enough band to participate)
some Jacobs Dream (but this is not a big enough band to participate)
...and perhaps another name I forget at the moment...

Well, I guess this is about it.

These series of "band of the week" kind of show that others forummers have other ideas (which was my point ;) ). That's fine with me. I just wanted to point out the views of a European metal/music lover.

It's not that I like those European bands more than American bands because they are from Europe. I just like variety in what I play and there's not enough from North America alone to provide that for me.

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Cool. In 2002 I had the opportunity to interview their bass player James Evans.

I like the singer and the music from the first two albums the most. He sounded a bit like Tate and I thought their music was an intelligent and powerful mix of Maiden and Queensryche elements.

Favourite track: Kinescope (studio version starts at 1.02).

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

We did kick this off with two European bands - so 2 out 4 aint that bad. ;)

Onto Megadeth: Peace Sells... has to rank, in my opinion, as their best effort. Looking through the track listing and you soon realise that there is no dud track (even the cover was executed well). Best tracks are possibly the title track and "Wake up Dead", but whatever the track, you do feel Mustaine's anger in every word that he spits out. Love it.

So Far So Good.. had quite possibly 'Deths best track - "In My Darkest Hour" and the best ever instrumental by any band - "Into the Lungs of Hell". But the album does not really stand up to it's predecessor. I can only pin this down to the odd below par track. "Mary Jane", "Liar" and "Hook in Mouth" are OK, but don't hold up to the quality of their second album. But then again, the cover on this was a better choice and a better execution.

Rust in Peace was a good solid effort and fairly consistent throughout. Some real class tracks like "Holy Wars", "Dawn Patrol" and the title track. But overall, just a shade below Peace Sells... - not by much though.

It was on the UK tour of this album that I saw Megadeth live (along with Slayer, Testament and Suicidal Tendencies on the same line-up) and I went into this gig thinking Mustaine was God. But I left with thinking he was a complete prick. Unfortunately, I lost sight of them and stopped buying their albums. So what did I miss? Well, it's only within the last 6 years or so, I've started to listen to their stuff....and I'm still catching up. :D

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

Ah, but what is next week's band?

One hint was given last week - it ties into a historical anniversary which happens next week.
Another hint, related to Foro's whining... next week's band is not from America.

As for Megadeth - I listened to Peace Sells yesterday, and that album is just amazing from start to finish. One bonecrunching riff after another.

(Yeah sure, Firefox, put a red line under bonecrunching when I type it, right ... obviously, the Mozilla people don't know about bonecrunching riffs.)

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

@Albie: 2 out of 6.

Apart from the origins, I am curious what you have for us SMX!

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

I'm just gonna get in and say I don't care where a band is from, and I didn't even notice most of the bands so far have been from America.

I'm guessing the historic event is the moon landing as it has it's 40th anniversary next week.

Re: Megadeth Week on Maidenfans

I'm with both Perun and Forostar on this one. I don't care where a band is from, but I so happen to like more Euro bands than U.S bands. Yup... I'm weird like that.

As for the current band. Megadeth kicks ass, pure and simple. While the first album is two good songs and nothing but crap, they really took off in later albums really cementing themselves with their "classic" line-up of Mustaine, Menza, Freidman and Elfman. They never pulled stupid stunts like Metallica did (We'll never do a music video, oh wait we will, we'll never do a soundtrack, oh wait, we will.) and they've always stayed true, even in "Risk" they admitted it was something different and hence a risk.

I can't wait.  I'm crafting an elegant forum post.
