Dear members of the Maidenfans community,
I just received news that an old friend of ours, who is known to our community as Maverick, passed away yesterday, 24th December 2024, at the age of 60. When I first joined this board in spring of 2004, he was one of the site admins and arguably the most active member. But he was especially known and respected as the person who ran the Iron Maiden Commentary, which he took over from Baelron several ears before, and which was hosted by Maidenfans.com at the time. There are not many people left here who will remember him from those days, but his posts are still there, although I think all of them are now "Anonymous".
Everybody who knew him will know that Maverick could be a difficult person to get along with, but moreso that he was a good friend. For a while, he and I were very close, and I met him in person twice, once at his home in Switzerland at Easter in 2006, and then a few years later after he had already left our community, for reasons that were his own, in around 2011. Our friendship and bond in those days far exceeded our membership in the Maiden community and our common interest in heavy metal. We eventually drifted apart but never completely lost touch. He continued to follow my path with interest and gave me genuine and kind words of encouragement and appreciation along the way. Earlier this year he suffered from a stroke that left him legally blind, although he stated that he would not give up fighting.
Those of us who knew Mav personally will undoubtedly have their own memories of him and be saddened by his passing. He has left a legacy to us in shape of the Iron Maiden Commentary, which he ceased to work on in 2011, but which stays here for us to read and appreciate. The man I knew is in each of the lines written there.
Maverick was a hardcore atheist, and he did not believe that there is a "beyond", but if he was wrong, I hope he will be treated kindly there for all the good things he gave us and left us with. I also hope that the demons he had been wrestling with are now finally leaving him in peace.
Thank you for everything, mate. I would not be who I am now without what you gave me.
