any thoughts on this new album. ive listened to it the other day but im still on the fence. i think its ok but not amazing. but everyone else whos heard it that i know says its better than the older stuff. i totally disagree with that. their older stuff is 10x better.

I have Leviathan and Blood Mountain, and from what I've heard of the new one they will be the only Mastodon albums I'll own, although to be fair Crack the Skye may be a 'grower'

I only have a couple of songs (literally) off of Leviathan, but I quite liked Crack the Skye. Admittedly, it did not live up to the hype. Personally I really like the tracks Ghost of Karelia and The Last Baron.

A bit off topic, but the track name "Ghost of Karelia" caught my attention, as it sounds a bit misplaced for that album.  After checking Wikipedia, their lyrical themes of the album have something to do with "the art aesthetics of Tsarist Russia, astral travel, out of body experiences and Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes".
Now, Karelia is not Russian, it's originally Finnish, taken by Russia during the Second World War, and though it was part of Russia during Tsarist times (like the whole of Finland), it really has quite little to do with Russia.  So I think the band probably messed up a bit on the lyrical content in that respect. :)  If anything, the "Ghost of Karelia" would, from my perspective, refer to the bitterness and hardships that the Soviet occupation of the area caused, but I can't really see any links to Tsarist Russia.

Just to toss this in: Mastodon are the most boring band I've ever had the misfortune to witness live.

I missed my opportunity to see them live :( Next time 'round.

As for the album. I think it is there best yet. Remissions is good, Leviathan is amazing, Blood Mountain wasn't that big of a leap forward, but of course, great outing. Crack the Skye slows things down a tad, more melodic, you can tell they took their time with it and I still have it in my car along with Opeth's Watershed (thread to open soon on the band in general).

I saw about 5 minutes of them.  Thankfully, their show ended after that.
