A Matter Of Life And Death wasn't mastered, going for the live vibe. From what I have heard on the album, I really enjoy that aspect of things, however it does mean that a certain polish is missing. I dig it, but I am hearing from some in a music store that they miss the mastering on this album...

"drums sound flat, guitars sound dirty, vocals lack depth, cues off a little bit"

I argued with some about the new album, citing the new live direction makes perfect sense for a band that is so awesome live. Sounds crisp enough for me.

Are there any here that would like to get a mastered version of the album? I wouldn't.

I think the only thing from what I have heard is that the vocals do sometimes sound a little pushed back on a few tracks, but I didn't mind it whatsoever.

If you want to hear a 'mastered' version, you could always play about with a program like Adobe Audition or T-Racks.  There are mastering presets in those programs that are kind of fun to mess about with. :)

there are upsides and downsides to the album not being mastered:
it's good to hear some dynamics on a cd nowadays, every metal (and not only) album coming out these days being compressed to death. also, the album was mixed quite well by shirley, and bad mastering (like the one on dance of death maybe ;) ) could have partially ruined it.
on the other hand, the guy in the music store had a point... there is a reason they're mastering records, you know :) (aside from making them louder, that is)

as for me... i'm editing and mastering my own version of amolad, and it kicks ass

I was thinking of playing around with the tracks a little bit... but I have been listening to this album non-stop for over a dozen plays now... and I wouldn't change a thing. This album is amazing, mastered or not. In fact, I think I like it much better now that it isn't mastered. Little nuances of mostly-live ring through. And make it IMO.

Anyone notice those faint cello-like sounds in the middle of For The Greater Good Of God? Is that Adrian doing something, or is that a keyboard, or ? Its an amazing sound.
