THIS IS A POWER RANKING GAME. The albums are arranged in the poll from best to worst, with the top seeded album being the top ranked album. I seeded the albums based on two facts: how many lists it appeared on, and my general understanding of this board's tastes after being here for 15 years. This way we don't have to spend multiple rounds moving an album like Brave New World to the top, it's already there unless voters decide to knock it off the top spot.

Essential Questions:
How do you knock albums off the top spot? If you feel like an album is ranked too low, vote for that album. Any album that receives a significant plurality of votes (this number will be fluid and based on participation) will move up a slot. If you like the list as is, vote for the top album.

How often does this update? I will look at the numbers roughly every 24 hours and move albums accordingly. You can vote for as many albums as you want and you can vote whenever the poll resets. After a week, I will close the poll and we will move on to the next year. This will take us to mid December with the finals wrapping up right at the new year.

How were albums selected? I would say 95% of the albums that will appear in this game were sourced from Maidenfans lists. Every album that was submitted will appear in the game. For years that have a lot of duplicates (2000 being one), I filled in the list with other acclaimed albums. Many years surprisingly had close to all unique albums, with 2014, 2020, and 2023 having only one duplicate each. No year featured an entirely unique list of albums. No Maidenfans nominated albums were seeded lower than an album I pulled from an outside source.

Do I need to listen to every album here? Not necessarily, but I would highly encourage it! You have a week to vote and the voting will update every day (so you can vote every day or you can vote once a week or whatever you want). Everybody has unlimited votes. I think you will get more out of this game if you listen to the albums you're not familiar with and see if you can find any new favorites.

My favorite album isn't here! You had 7 months to send me a list!!!

I want to thank everybody who participated. I received 17 lists and 250+ albums! Most years had quite a variety of material and it made me appreciate the diversity of taste around here. I'm really excited to dig into each list I got and I am going to do my best to listen to every album. With that being said, let's get started with...

MMXV
  1. Iron Maiden - The Book of Souls
  2. Leprous - The Congregration
  3. Amorphis - Under the Red Cloud
  4. Swallow the Sun - Songs from the North
  5. Lamb of God - Sturm Und Drang
  6. Ahab - The Boats of the Glen Carrig
  7. Visigoth - The Revenant King
  8. Sweet & Lynch - Only To Rise
  9. Elder - Lore
  10. Cain's Offering - Stormcrow
  11. Ghost - Meliora
  12. Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful
  13. Paradise Lost - The Plague Within
  14. Symphony X - Underworld
  15. Queensyrche - Condition Human
It's a surprise to me, but Maiden hasn't exactly performed as well in these games as you might think. BNW and AMOLAD topped their respective years, which is understandable and well deserved, but Dance of Death and The Final Frontier were both upset by other bands, Final Frontier in particular was dethroned by Seventh Wonder of all things in what I would consider to be a somewhat weak year. So I'll be curious what happens here. TBOS tends to be regarded more favorably around here than TFF/DOD, but I also would argue it's not one of the band's strongest 21st century offerings. Additionally, 2015 comes in with one of the strongest sets of albums we've seen in quite some time. Almost every album that appears by one of this game's perennial favorites is arguably that band's strongest. The Congregation, Under the Red Cloud, Songs From the North, Meliora, Endless Forms, Underworld, AND Condition Human were all critically acclaimed and embraced by fans upon release. Wow! If I didn't include an album in that list, it's mostly because I'm not very familiar with the album or that fanbase to know where it stacks up.

At face value, I think this is really anybody's game. I could see Ghost jumping up, I could see Nightwish being competitive, I could see Leprous taking the crown (probably the best album here for my money). Symphony X and Queensyrche offerings aren't my favorites, but I also don't expect those albums to stay in the bottom two seeds. Queensryche in particular is interesting as this will be their first album with potential in the entire game. That's a long time for a classic Metal band to be in the wilderness. Whether they can jump up to the top is another story, but it's not outside the realms of possibility. I think there are a couple bands who haven't received enough recognition here, namely Swallow the Sun and Amorphis, and this could be their moment (unlikely). Overall though I think it's going to be competitive.

Clear winners here for me:

  • The Book Of Souls - one of Maiden's albums with a good balance (definitely from the Reunion era) and it's very strong. Some songs are masterpieces! No fillers as such too. The songwriting is better than for the previous album for the most part. Easily the best album, no doubt.
  • Endless Forms Most Beautiful - the best album with Floor (and their old school style). Yes, the closer is too much with its 24 minutes (''The Toolmaker'' part is great), but honestly I think all songs (bar Our Decades, Eyes is just an intro, and the chorus of Empty Hope) are some of my favorites of the band, which is impressive to say. I love it.

Queensryche's Condition Human is also nice, it sounds like their old days, but it's not that wow for me (the songs are enjoyable, the title track is a needed longer one, Arrow Of Time is cool). The same can be said for Sweet & Lynch's Only To Rise, a very nice surprise, even more enjoyable (I think all songs).

Only have Book of Souls and Meliora, Meliora probably the best Ghost release since the first album, Book of Souls probably second best Maiden album since the reunion.

Really hope people give The Boats of the Glen Carrig a chance. Ahab began working on it after a fan suggested they do a concept album about the William Hope Hodgson album and the result is their most dynamic, colorful, and vibrant album to date. It’s still a doom record but there are a ton of clean passages and clean vocals alongside the heavy funereal ones. “The Light in the Weeds” has no gutturals at all. It also has their fastest and shortest song (“Like Red Foam”) and their longest, heaviest song (“The Weedmen”, one of my absolute favorites). “The Thing That Made Search” is pretty goddamn psychedelic.

It feels like this album has been overshadowed by their other records but to me it is easily their best album that isn’t Call of the Wretched Sea and among my favorite metal albums of all time. If you aren’t fully into the funeral doom they perfected on Call then maybe the post-rock elements they’ve added since then will make you connect more with The Glen Carrig.

Easy votes for Ghost’s best album, a great start (and probably peak) for Nightwish feat. Floor Jansen, and arguably the most well-rounded and balanced modern Symphony X album (which still preserved their polymetric penchants, unlike Paradise Lost).

Book of Souls is a decent album, but voting for Maiden on a Maiden forum when there are far more deserving releases is unethical to me. It also didn’t need to be a double album, as there’s several fillers in there (Tears, Sorrows).

Lots of votes for this round!
  • I voted for Book of Souls, but probably won't continue to. It's definitely my third favorite reunion album, though.

  • Under The Red Cloud is one of Amorphis' best works. A great album!

  • Everyone not voting for Visigoth has not heard The Revenant King. Listen to it, pleebs!

  • Meliora is probably Ghost's best (or second best) album. Easy vote.

  • I'm a pretty big fan of Endless Forms Most Beautiful, even if the final track is woefully overwrought.

  • Underworld is a very good Symphony X album. It's still probably my 6th or 7th favorite Symphony X album, but they can't all be 10/10's, can they?!

Endless Forms Most Beautiful - the best album with Floor (and their old school style). Yes, the closer is too much with its 24 minutes (''The Toolmaker'' part is great), but honestly I think all songs (bar Our Decades, Eyes is just an intro, and the chorus of Empty Hope) are some of my favorites of the band, which is impressive to say. I love it.
Wait, the chorus of Empty Hope is one of the only bad things?! I love it.
