I've started, so I'll finish...

Mastermind is a legendary UK quiz show, where contestants face an inquisition on their chosen specialised subject.

And next Monday, FC member Rachel Hobbs will be taking her place in the Mastermind chair to answer questions on Iron Maiden!

The show's broadcast at 7.30pm on Monday October 8th on BBC2 here in the UK - check your local listings for variations.

Everyone in the office would like to wish you the very best of luck Rachel, and I'm sure the folks on the forum do too!

Apparently there will also be an Iron Maiden quiz on the Mastermind site immediately after broadcast - you can check that out at http://www.bbc.co.uk/entertainment/mastermind/

Sounds interesting. I haven't seen this program yet, but I think I might check it out.

There was a similar show on German television a few years ago, although it was not all too popular (no prime time, poor advertising, second-rate channel). The idea was that you go there, answer ten questions, and if they are all correct, you can return next time (I think you could return twice). The people who were on that show were real buffs on their subjects, but I hardly ever saw anyone returning; most failed at the final question. I was sometimes surprised at the level of the questions the people failed at (you should think that a Queen buff would know the first bassist the band ever had was not John Deacon), but in general, it was good entertainment and the show also had a good host.
Anyway, I'm really interested in seeing what questions they will come up with for that show.

Interestingly enough, I went to school with a Rachel Hobbs - though I doubt it's the same one (but you may never know).

If any one is interested, I will record this show end edit out everything but her questions.

Here more info Albie (and others ;) ) -->

Britain's Bexhill-On-Sea Observer reports: IRON MAIDEN might not seem like the obvious choice for a teacher's specialist subject on "Mastermind", but St Bede's science technician Rachel Hobbs

fell for the band when just seven years old.

Rachel, who teaches at the senior school at The Dicker, was introduced to IRON MAIDEN by her mother.
She decided to brave the black chair to answer questions on the band and the episode is being shown on Monday (October 8th).

Rachel travelled up to Manchester for the filming of the program. She was in the lead after the first round with 16 points, her closest rival just one point behind. She said, "I was worried that nerves might take over, but the adrenalin sees you through and you are just concentrating on the questions."

She now has the taste for "Mastermind" and is already in the process of applying for next year's program.
She says she will probably choose as her specialist subject the Promethea comics of Alan Moore — sci-fantasy set in an alternative now.

Rachel, 32, lives in Hailsham and last year went to an IRON MAIDEN concert at Earls Court with her mother (still a fan) and her 12-year-old daughter.

Amazing.  Three generations going to the same concert...

Too bad I can't see the show, though.

They used to have an Indian version of Mastermind. I remember watching it about 4 or 5 years back, particularly a specialist round about the Asterix comics.  B)

It's on tonight!

Australian IRON MAIDEN Fan Wins Two Rounds Of 'The Einstein Factor'; Video Available - Oct. 8, 2007

An Australian IRON MAIDEN fan by the name of Scott Adams recently won two rounds of the country's quiz show "The Einstein Factor" (ABC), answering questions on "The Lives and Music of Iron Maiden 1979 - Present Day." He will shortly appear in the series final of this show.

To download episode 30 of "The Einstein Factor" featuring Adams (originally aired September 2, 2007), follow these links:
WMV --> http://mpegmedia.abc.net.au/tv/einstein ... 7_ep30.wmv
MP4 --> http://mpegmedia.abc.net.au/tv/einstein ... 7_ep30.mp4

According to "The Einstein Factor"'s web site ( http://www.abc.net.au/einsteinfactor/txt/s1970005.htm ), Adams is originally from England, but now lives in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory). He's a rock fan from way back, being heavily influenced by his father who would do the housework whilst blaring out STATUS QUO. A pivotal moment for Scott came in 1983 when he saw JUDAS PRIEST live. He has had some musical sucess of his own, scoring a No. 1 hit with his band in Finland.

Thanks for the link, Forostar.

The questions were fairly easy.  I could have answered at least 75% with no more than a second of thought.  I expected tougher ones.

I had 3 Maiden questions wrong, I think. Those questions were fairly easy but the speed of this game necked me ;)

I'm curious if it will be the same in about an hour on BBC 2.

It's on now. She got 16 in the first round and passed on 3. I knew most of them but couldn't get the answer out as quick as she could :P
Ah she came 2nd but doesnt go through to the semi final. Her general knowledge wasn't as good as someone elses who beat her by 1 point.

Same here hehe what a speed. Unfortunately she didn't win. I liked the way she explained what she likes about Maiden.

@Perun & LC: the quiz featured a question in which King William III was mentioned. Hah!  :)

I didn't really understand the rules with thoses "passes". Sometimes the passes were counted as points, but other times they were not (in Rachel's case :( ).

Passes are never counted as points in Mastermind. The idea being that, if you don't know the question, you can move to the next one instead of wasting time. If the scores are tied, then the number of passes will come into play, with the person with the least number of passes winning (which didn't happen here).

If you are interested, I am busy uploading the clip of her questions.

I, for one, was impressed by her performance.  Seems like a fairly humorless show, though -- both the moderator and Ms. Hobbs seemed grim.

It does take a lot to fire out the answers in that time. I wouldn't have done that well.
