Actually communist and communism are words that are used VERY loosely since neither of them ever existed (except maybe early christians). communism as a social structure has been around... oh for ever and to this day there are "communist" colonies in various parts of the world including the U.S. Communism (with capital 'C') is an economic system formulated by Marx which never took off. One of the reasons was he died before finishing his formulation on how to carry it out and the other because people have GROSSLY misunderstood it (including myself). I used to consider my self a commie until it was (rudely) pointed out to me by one of my professors that reading the communist manifesto, some of Das Kapital and wearing Lenin and Che Guevara t-shirts does not make me a communist. Also Cuba, China and the former USSR were NEVER communist... they were Socialist.. BIG difference. Of those states only Cuba is still Socialist. Russia is now capitalist AND a democracy while china is a politically socialist regime but economically they are capitalist (probably even more capitalist than the U.S).

Most of the socialism (who claims to be communism-states) have had dictators and the socialism has never really worked, as it's planned to.
 
True, Because of the one-party system dictatorships are rather easy to pull off in socialist regimes. Not to mention that Socialism is a step prior to communism in which the goverment rules every single aspect of the peoples lives (what the U.S feared to begin with). In this stage of transition people are trained (they use 'educated' hehe) into sharing and being able to get by with basic needs and no luxaries. After a period of Socialism the government is supposed to (but of course they never did) start relaxing its grip and slowly move into the background until basically it is invisible, because people now know what to do and live in communism. That is the biggest difference. Socialism: Goverment enforced; Communism: People don't need the government breathing down their necks to know how to live under the system. Cuba is an interesting place to keep an eye on... Castro is reaching his 50th year as dictator (the longest in history) and he has relaxed his grip because he has two generations of cuban's under his belt already indoctrinated in communism. However when he dies two things might happen. 1. The U.S might step in again and try to "save" the poor commie cubans OR, they will remain communist....which is highly unlikely. The international community will probably not allow it. I come from a country of the former soviet block, and although I didn't live one day (except for when I was in my mothers' womb) and I do know a litle about it. Here, I guess we can talk about socialism, because untill the Revolution of '89, the security services were almighty and tried to know, and thus control every aspect of ones life. Comunism (or socialism) has a liimit on how good things are gonna get, economically speaking. That's due to the fact that therfe is no competition, thus no fluctuation in the prices and all is becoming routine. China did the smartes thing possible: capitalized the economy, yet keeping a totalitary gouverment.
 
Right! The reason capitalism has been so successful is that regardless of its flaws it can work in a big scale... Communism can only be successful in a small community and the USSR was to big to handle it. Not to mention, Marx aimed Communism at industrialized nations like the USA and Germany, countries with the economic backbone to be able to handle the transition. However its egalitarian message resonate more in developing nations like Russia and many Latin American nations. In the '30's Mexico's presidents claimed to be atheist (when Mexico became independant it claimed Catholicism as the official religion) and persecuted priests. However Communisms influence did infiltrate Europe after all. Germany has a BIG socialist influence and not to mention Sweden. Most Swedish Metal bands actually leave Sweden to break out internationally and make the big bucks because they can't do that in Sweden. Opeth is the ONLY Swedish metal band considered "art" by the swedish government. It has a lot of pros, more than people think.
