While reading for my Arthurian Legend class, I have discovered a few underlying themes:
Saxons are bad. No matter what. Don't make deals with them. (Geoffrey of Monmouth)
Poisoning might be a convienent way to get rid of rivals to the throne, but it will come back to bite you in the ass later. (Geoffrey of Monmouth)
Giant magical pigs are unstoppable. (Culhwch and Olwen)
Never get into a cart. It might be easier than walking, but it's just not worth it in the long run. (Chretien de Troyes)
Don't promise a favour to a random visitor at your court until you know precisely what they'll be asking for. (Just about any Arthur tale)
Never steal Gareth's dwarf. (Malory)
Never fall asleep under a tree. (Malory)
No matter how hot the queen might be, chances are there's some other lady in the realm just as foxy who is NOT married to your king. (Malory)
Word order? Consistant spelling? Punctuation? Who needs 'em? (Malory)
It's perfectly acceptable for characters to be grusomely killed and then reappear a few pages later no worse for wear. (Malory)
All ladies except the queen are named Elaine. Just accept it.
and most importantly of all....
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
