Lessons from Sir Thomas Malory

IronDuke

Ancient Mariner
While reading for my Arthurian Legend class, I have discovered a few underlying themes:

Saxons are bad. No matter what. Don't make deals with them. (Geoffrey of Monmouth)

Poisoning might be a convienent way to get rid of rivals to the throne, but it will come back to bite you in the ass later. (Geoffrey of Monmouth)

Giant magical pigs are unstoppable. (Culhwch and Olwen)

Never get into a cart. It might be easier than walking, but it's just not worth it in the long run. (Chretien de Troyes)

Don't promise a favour to a random visitor at your court until you know precisely what they'll be asking for. (Just about any Arthur tale)

Never steal Gareth's dwarf. (Malory)

Never fall asleep under a tree. (Malory)

No matter how hot the queen might be, chances are there's some other lady in the realm just as foxy who is NOT married to your king. (Malory)

Word order? Consistant spelling? Punctuation? Who needs 'em? (Malory)

It's perfectly acceptable for characters to be grusomely killed and then reappear a few pages later no worse for wear. (Malory)

All ladies except the queen are named Elaine. Just accept it.

and most importantly of all....

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

That's from Monthy Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail isn't it???

I mean, if I was to go around calling myself King, just because some moistened bint chucked a sword at me, they'd put me away!

You don't know much about King Arthur's legend, do you? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Not really but I saw the Monthy Python movie some weeks ago and I seem to recall that some character said something like that but I may be wrong.

Yeh, Dennis was his name. You know your Monty Python, which is a good thing!

hmm i think to know your Monty Python yet not know your Arthurian Legends is actually disturbing.... oh well, that's pop culture for ya.

Monty Python is actually funny when you're able to relate what you watch to the original legend. If not, it's probably a bit wacky, but not really funny.

Imagine watching The Life Of Brian not knowing anything about the legends surrounding that Jesus character! [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I do know a bit of the Arthurian Legends but I never read it. I've seen the movie 2 years ago (the real one, not the monthy python) for my french class.

Yeah I know: english tale, english movie for a french class.... [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
Don't ask....

Considering that a lot of the Arthurian tradition is actually French...well, I'd say to fill your boots, Battlemaniacs.

Well, you don't seem to "knew" much, hey? [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Am I supposed to? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

It's part of this silly useless thing called "culture". Never mind, who needs it? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/rolleyes.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'rolleyes.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Ooooh, that thing... I may have heard of it but I never saw one... [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/lol[1].gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'lol[1].gif\' /][!--endemo--]
