Last week Kerrang! (or Kerrap) gave away a free CD celebrating twenty years since 'Master of Puppets' was released. This CD has eight different bands covering the eight songs on 'Master of Puppets'.

Tracklisting:
1. Machine Head - Battery
2. Trivium - Master of Puppets
3. Mendeed - The Thing that should not be
4. Bullet for My Valentine - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5. Chimaira - Disposable Heroes
6. Fightstar - Leper Messiah
7. Mastadon - Orion
8. Funeral for a Friend - Damge, Inc.

I bought the magazine especially to listen to the CD and my opinions vary from track to track.

Machine Head - The intro isn't great, it sounds like they detuned too much or something (I'm not a musician so I'm not sure). The rest of the song is good though as Rob Flynn's vocals make the song quite heavy. Not as good as the original though.

Trivium - As a Trivium fan (I know you lot hate them) I found this awesome. The solos are perfect and Matt Heafy has refrained from screaming to make this song as good as any of Trivium's own.

Mendeed - I'd say this is average. There isn't much to say about this other than it makes me appreciate the orignial more.

Bullet for my Valentine - I like BFMV ( :: ). but this is terrible. Their singer doesn't siut this song at all because his voice is too whiny. The original is one million times better.

Chimaira - I didn't like the screaming much at first, but I got used to it after a few listens. However, the screaming is a bit monotone and therefore the song looses something of what it had originally. I now appreciate the original more than I did before.

Fightstar - A strange choice of band to be on a Metallica covers album, considering his past. They haven't done too badly though, but I would have prefered a metal band to do it. This also makes me appreciate the original more.

Mastadon - The production on this sucks. They don't appear to have messed anything up but it's difficult to tell.

Funeral for a Friend - EMO. I could stop there but FFAF have murdered 'Damge, Inc.' Instead of their usual melodic singing, their drummer screams the whole song. Terrible.

Did anybody else bother to buy this? If so what are your opinions?

The idea of Mastodon covering "Orion" sounds intriguiing to me. When I saw them live, I hated their vocals but thought their musicianship was great. At that time, I thought their musical style sounded like it had a strong MoP-era Metallica influence. I could well imagine them doing a fine job with this song. Especially since they wouldn't have to sing.

I would never buy Kerrap! in a million years but I might now just to give this a listen [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /] The bands up there seem like the staple diet for Kerrang! listeners and I don't like many of them but at the price of a mag, this looks like a decent tribute album... It's my favourite album of all time [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /]

Bit late to be saying that now, the new issue comes out in 2 hours [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sleep.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"-_-\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sleep.gif\" /]

Fuck it them [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]
And EDIT for BDs comment - It is more or less tied with Operation Mindcrime [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

Hm... I didn't know that MOP was your favourite album Conor, nice to know anyway. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /] Out of those bands, only Mastodon are of any worth, and maybe just the 1st Machine Head album. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I forgopt to tell you, I bought it today [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]
The shop had one issue left in stock and I bought it straight away... the magazine is terrible and the CD isn't much better. Those emo bands put their own "sound" onto the songs and ruin the thrashy element. I would have to say I dislike every vocal performance on that album also.

If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Battery but they are all poor representatives for the original [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

I guess you went to all that bother for no good reason... what can I do to repay you? [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sleep.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"-_-\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sleep.gif\" /]

In an attempt to get this thread back on topic, isn't it funny how this thread ties in with the "Best Review Ever" thread? [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/happy.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"^_^\" border=\"0\" alt=\"happy.gif\" /]

(Yes, I know, I'm just trying to stop this thread from descending into the blasphemous abyss of spam.)

Wow, that wasn't a blatantly obvious attempt to boost one's post count. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sleep.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"-_-\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sleep.gif\" /]

That's why I did it.

And that's why your post count suddendly dropped back from 113 to 63.

1. Consider yourself lucky it wasn't reset to 0.
2. Let it be a warning to anyone else who'd be tempted to do the same. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/dry.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"<_<\" border=\"0\" alt=\"dry.gif\" /]

Spam is fine as long as it's confined to the Madness Forum. Please (re-)read the forum rules. Thanks.

I don't know why Child Of The Grave felt the need to do that. Post count does not automatically transfer into respectability, so he should learn the hard way. Damn kids these days.[img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/dry.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"<_<\" border=\"0\" alt=\"dry.gif\" /] Either way, it's nice to Mav all grumpy again, I can't imagine the forum without his terrorism. Speaking vaguely on-topic, tribute CDs can be good, but this is just a cheep Kerrang! pile of crap! [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

You say that now....I wonder what you would say if he actually did it.

This is really on-topic stuff. ::

Back on topic then:
After listening to each song a couple of times, I really do think the original is perfect. We can see how some of these bands mess up what have always been masterpieces. Even the much maligned "The Thing That Should Not Be" sounds like heaven compared with Mendeed's version. This tribute album has made me appreciate even more what a great accomplishment MoP was for the whole metal genre. I'm sure without that album, those bands wouldn't even be around today and to risk sounding like a Kerrang! journalist, Metallica are the most important band in the metal genre.

I don't want to jump to rash conclusions because Metallica have also seen many troughs throughout their career but in terms of influence, they are the biggest band out there [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /]
