Last week Kerrang! (or Kerrap) gave away a free CD celebrating twenty years since 'Master of Puppets' was released. This CD has eight different bands covering the eight songs on 'Master of Puppets'.
Tracklisting:
1. Machine Head - Battery
2. Trivium - Master of Puppets
3. Mendeed - The Thing that should not be
4. Bullet for My Valentine - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
5. Chimaira - Disposable Heroes
6. Fightstar - Leper Messiah
7. Mastadon - Orion
8. Funeral for a Friend - Damge, Inc.
I bought the magazine especially to listen to the CD and my opinions vary from track to track.
Machine Head - The intro isn't great, it sounds like they detuned too much or something (I'm not a musician so I'm not sure). The rest of the song is good though as Rob Flynn's vocals make the song quite heavy. Not as good as the original though.
Trivium - As a Trivium fan (I know you lot hate them) I found this awesome. The solos are perfect and Matt Heafy has refrained from screaming to make this song as good as any of Trivium's own.
Mendeed - I'd say this is average. There isn't much to say about this other than it makes me appreciate the orignial more.
Bullet for my Valentine - I like BFMV ( :: ). but this is terrible. Their singer doesn't siut this song at all because his voice is too whiny. The original is one million times better.
Chimaira - I didn't like the screaming much at first, but I got used to it after a few listens. However, the screaming is a bit monotone and therefore the song looses something of what it had originally. I now appreciate the original more than I did before.
Fightstar - A strange choice of band to be on a Metallica covers album, considering his past. They haven't done too badly though, but I would have prefered a metal band to do it. This also makes me appreciate the original more.
Mastadon - The production on this sucks. They don't appear to have messed anything up but it's difficult to tell.
Funeral for a Friend - EMO. I could stop there but FFAF have murdered 'Damge, Inc.' Instead of their usual melodic singing, their drummer screams the whole song. Terrible.
Did anybody else bother to buy this? If so what are your opinions?
