  • Marion County has allowed a Portland-area skinhead group to adopt a rural Salem road as part of a volunteer litter clean-up program.

The signs proclaiming that Sunnyview Road NE between Cordon Road and 82nd Avenue is sponsored by the American Nazi Party NSM were installed Monday.

First the shower, then the boots... now the roads! Are we ever going to get rid of the bastards? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I may have no-to little foresight, but I don't see anything wrong in letting the Nazis adopt and clean a strip of highway. Now, if they start posting stuff like "no jews allowed the next 1 mile" then there's a problem. But other than that they are not hurting, hating or discriminating anybody by adopting their mile.

I don't see a problem with it either. Yes, Nazis are bad racist people. But if they want to clean up a highway - what else is their white-trash asses good for?

Nothing wrong with Nazis. Just because they've got a few questionable viewpoints doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to take out the trash once in a while.

In the long run, the most important thing is free speech. We just need to educate people to ignore idiots like this.

This is just PR. The nazis want to show the people they are "not so bad people" and that they care for their environment. This should be viewed in the same way as propaganda posters.

I agree with LC on this one. Let them adopt a road, let them make their own TV chanel, if thye have the money, but as long as there's an educated population, these things wouldn't put a dent in it

Perun has a point, but I don't care if they donate 5,000 dollars to cancer research tomorrow... Nazis are Nazis not mother Teresa so they can do all the stunts they want in the end they are racist morons.

I was perusing Snopes last night and saw [a href=\'http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/outrage/rosapark.htm\' target=\'_blank\']this[/a]. When the KKK adopted a highway in Missouri, the State Legislature couldn't stop them because of free speech laws, so they changed the name of the highway to the Rosa Parks Memorial Highway. The KKK had to clean a road that was named after a person they despise. (Or at least they were supposed to clean it - read the article for what happened.)

So perhaps the highway adopted by the Nazis could be renamed after a famous Jew, such as [a href=\'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Wiesenthal\' target=\'_blank\']Simon Wiesenthal[/a]. Seems like the best solution to me, at least.

The very first amendment to the Constituion of the USA:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

So, until the Nazis do something illegal, they are allowed to adopt highways, kittens, and anything else they damn well please. As disgusting as their beliefs are, they are entitled to the same freedoms all other Americans enjoy.

I got a bit mad when I saw this. The first thought to my head was of the old people living in this area. Survivors of the war. Or jews.

Then after thinking about it. If somone who hated me would be cleaning the street outside my house, I would love it. To see them pick up thrash by the highway would please me very much. And if they could name the road after someone like the famous jew mentioned by SMX it would just increase the pleasure.
