Janick Gers on the new album

Ancient Mariner
Guitarist Janick Gers of British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN revealed to BBC News that the band has already started writing songs for its 15th studio album. "We're going to Paris for three weeks to work on some new stuff," Gers said at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards 2009 on November 2 at the Park Lane Hotel in London, England. "The most important thing for a band is to create new music, otherwise you're not valid — you become a parody."

MAIDEN became the first outfit in history to travel round the world in a customized jet during their "Somewhere Back in Time" tour, as detailed in award-winning movie "Flight 666".

The Boeing 757 carried musicians, crew, gear and guests with singer Bruce Dickinson, a qualified airline pilot, at the controls.

Speaking in the Iron Maiden Fan Club magazine, IRON MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood recently said, "It took a long time to set up the last tour because of the plane. It had never been done before and we didn't know what we were letting ourselves in for. The idea came a couple of years before that and we got into it a year ahead of the game.

"I'm starting to get my head round what we're going to do next summer. It hasn't been decided yet but we'll do something, so I've got to speak to promoters and agents.

"Now we know the plane works, by Christmas we'll have the pattern set. We'll probably be going for the plane and getting that held for us.

"But at the moment, the album's the key thing on the agenda. The guys will be getting together shortly and they're probably starting to get their heads round new ideas for songs individually. Some of them may meet up before we formally get together.

"We'll spend a period writing, we'll take Christmas off and then we'll get into recording. We'll finish the album in time for it to be out next year and I'm just getting my head round what we want to do touring-wise.

"We'll be doing some new places on the next tour. I won't tell you where they are - they're not finalized yet, but some work has been done. One place we can't play that we'd like to is Bolivia — the altitude is just too high for the type of physical performance the guys do. It's a shame."

I think Adrian / Steve would be "them", just like on AMOLAD. Seems to me that Adrian's got few ideas already, seeing how much he tweaked with solos during the first, and especially second leg of the last tour.

But i'm worried about Murray, who seems to have reduced input as time goes by, and on the last tour, he's been more static than others, sometimes he'd play a song without leaving the same square meter. Or maybe he prefers to play new material  :)

IMHO, we'll have an album by April, and tour should start in June or July.
I just hope they'll be in central / eastern Europe sometime in July or August, so i can plan my next vacation
And this time no peeking at setlists and bootleg watching before the show!  :D

Don't worry about Murray. In the eighties it was always one song or no songs. Later he did more, I guess because H and later Bruce were gone. Since H returned, Dave did less on every subsequent album, but that didn't spoil the albums, at least, it didn't spoil the latest album.

Still, Steve made clear that it was a random choice to go to Adrian first. I think this was also on that DVD accompanying the ltd. edition of AMOLAD? Or else it was in some other interview.

We'll see how random it was when we'll see the next song credits (which for me is already a great moment to read, even before I know a single note).

Personally, I'd love to see some more Harris/Smith/Dickinson on the next album.

And I'm betting on the album being released September or October.  Rumours I am hearing point to a summer pre-tour, and then a fall release, which is consistent with the AMOLAD schedule (minus the pre-tour).

More than what? The previous album has 4 of such tracks which is quite a lot for one album (and a record).
edit: Not that I mind, but I can't imagine that half a Maiden album (5 tracks) would be written by the same "team".

I don't know, Dave was brilliant on this tour, played all of his solos to perfection, I have to admit he was better than Adrian (precision-wise). And I'm sure you probably watched Flight 666 - they all say he's the quiet one, you don't go asking him what's the weather going to be like tomorrow. :D I don't think there's a problem with Dave. The whole band seems as stable and content as they were during the BNW tour.

I'm saying they were responsible for great songs on AMOLAD, and I'd love to see more songs written by the three of them.

I agree 200%. In fact, this morning I wanted to make the same post. Live, Dave is by far the best.

I can't agree.

Dave mainly plays legato runs, while Adrian's solos are based on melody, the sound of picking and timings. Plus, Dave tends to play with a lot of effects like echo / chorus and such. Basically, Dave's style and sound is more error-proof by itself.

And, Flight 666 features some minor "mistakes" by Adrian, actually not mistakes but something like sound artifacts coming from touching / hitting another string. Like on Wasted Years, end of second passage of the solo.

On the other hand, he was flawless and his solos even more complexed in Santiago 2009.
Just depends on the night, i guess.

Dave sounds more clear. Crystal clear. You hear him so well when witnessing in concert. Always better than the others in my ears. Effects or not, that contributes to the overall impression.

Adrian has to work for it, sometimes squeezes his solo out of his guitar. I always have the feeling that Dave plays with less effort and that's also why it sounds better.

personally, i cant wait for said new album! hope they play ireland again! gettin back into maiden BIG TIME, for me its just great to see the guys still doin what they do best!!!
