Is it just my dvd, or is RiR too heavily compressed?

Yax

Ancient Mariner
I was watching Rock in Rio tonight, for the first time in its entirety in a few years. Something I noticed was that it was overly compressed - The sound pressure level would go down dramatically in the middle of the song, kind of like a limiter, way too high compression ratio and a fairly slow release timel. It was kind of the anti climax when in the middle of crunching power chords, the sound gets taken down signitifcantly. And this during several songs. Did anybody else notice this?

I have noticed this too on my copy. The sound level continually goes up and down  :S But The Cd's are fine

Exactly. Somebody messed up (the mastering tech? They are the ones that do the final compression). Compresso on the master bus can be highly destructive...

If I remember correctly, the DVD contains both stereo sound and 5:1 sound, right? Does this happen with both? It's quite some time since I watched the DVD myself, and  I can clearly remember hearing this flaw as well (but I don't remember if it was the 5:1 or stereo track).

I think you are right, I watched this a few months ago with the 5.1 track and did not notice this.

It's probably the way your stereo (a different one from the one you used when you first played it?) is set up. I never had any problems.

Actually, the DVD has 5.1 Digital and 5.1 DTS, there's no stereo option.  So depending on how your system is set up, if it defaults to stereo it's gonna sound off because you're not getting the entire sound scape.

But if you listen to it with a stereo setup, it shouldn't be doing that still. I have listened to other 5.1 tracks with a stereo output and never had any problems at all, because everything just gets panned to stereo automatically anyway when you're listening with a stereo setup. This is very odd.
