The heavy lifting is over. We have slotted 144 Iron Maiden songs into 18 tiers of eight.
Now the songs will play off within their tier to determine the final ranking.

Each poll will remain open two days like we've been doing, but to speed things up I am going to try to launch a new thread daily. And please make your cases. Some good discussion recently.

Rules here:

By the way, each match-up is from a different tier; the closer to the bottom, the higher the tier.
My thoughts:
The Educated Fool has been drastically underrated in this game. Check it out. It has some beautiful melodies.
Charlotte is three or four tiers too high.
I think Run to the Hills is as overplayed as the next Maidenfan, but when Total Eclipse beats it, it will be a crime.
Virus is the best song in today's poll.

  1. Weekend Warrior
  2. The Fugitive
  3. Losfer Words
  4. The Mercenary
  5. Lightning Strikes Twice
  6. Montsegur
  7. Public Enema Number One
  8. Virus
  9. Total Eclipse

Gangland
The Fugitive, of course
Losfer Words
The Mercenary
The Educated Fool
Face In The Sand
Public Enema Number One
Virus
Total Eclipse

1. Gangland (This was an easy choice for me. I've always valued this song more than most Maiden fans, whilst Weekend Warrior has always been one of Maiden's weakest for me.)

2. The Fugitive (Another easy choice for me here. I actually love The Fugitive with it's pummelling main riff and intense solo and bridge sections. DLTTEOAS is better than Weekend Warrior, but it's still a very weak one in Maiden's overall discography. )

3. Losfer Words (Although Losfer is the song I like least on Powerslave, I still like it quite a bit, and it's much better than Drifter which is such a non-descript track.)

4. The Mercenary (Two underrated ones here, though I love The Mercenary whereas I just think New Frontier is good and above average. I really love the punishing vibe of the former, with it's brutal lyrics, and Davey's crushing solo!)

5. Lightning Strikes Twice (Yet another easy decision for me. Lightning Strikes Twice is actually my fave song from Virtual XI, whereas The Educated Fool is amongst the songs I like least. Lightning is fast, catchy, and energetic with a stunning Davey solo. I don't dislike The Educated Fool, but it's a bit repetitive, which nearly kills the song as it's slow and pedestrian anyway. It has a nice philosophical vibe to it though, even in it's music.)

6. Montsegur (Very easy choice for me on this one. Montsegur is in my top 3 Dance Of Death songs, and one of my fave Maiden songs overall, whereas Face In The Sand is the song I like least from DOD. I find it immensely dull and boring.)

7. Public Enema Number One (At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this one was yet another easy choice for me! lol :p There's not a single track on No Prayer that I wouldn't rate miles higher than Charlotte The Harlot. I love the lyrics and ominous music on Public Enema, and it's impassioned, pleading chorus. Davey's solo on it is awesome too. Charlotte on the other hand, is the track I like least off the debut.)

8. Wasting Love (This was the first out of the poll choices that gave me a bit of trouble, as I love both songs. Wasting... just wins out for me, as it's a beautiful song, highly underrated, and I love the lyrics too. It's melodies are amazing, and Janick plays a very tuneful, mournful solo too. Virus is a great song, and it rocks... this was a tough decision for me!)

9. Total Eclipse (Total Eclipse is one of Maiden's most underrated songs, and is actually one of my fave tracks from NOTB (if you count remaster). It's a highly atmospheric, and captivating song. The dark lyrics are awesome, and perfectly compliment the foreboding music. Run To The Hills is a classic, and a very fun song... but to me it can't compare to Total Eclipse, that song is just a monster!)

Gangland (both horrible)
Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger
Losfer Words (not even close)
The Mercenary
Lightning Strikes Twice
Face in the Sand
Public Enema Number One (not even close)
Virus (despise them both)
Total Eclipse

Gangland
Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger
Losfer Words
The Mercenary
Lightning Strikes Twice
Face in the Sand
Public Enema Number One
Wasting Love
Run to the Hills

Gangland
The Fugitive
Drifter (tough one)
The Mercenary
Lightning Strikes Twice
Montsegur
Public Enema Number One
Wasting Love
Total Eclipse

I'm not too surprised to see Gangland beating Weekend Warrior, but I am a bit surprised at the margin it's winning by. I've seen Gangland come in for some very harsh criticsm, and on this site too, so to see it winning so emphatically over Weekend Warrior I think just shows how much disdain many people feel for the latter track... I'm also surprised to see Public Enema way out in front against Charlotte The Harlot, though I'm unsure if this is because most of the voters love Public Enema, or they just see Charlotte as being even worse than it. lol

I did expect to see Total Eclipse giving Run To The Hills a run for it's money, but it's a little surprising to see it out in front in that battle. I hope it stays there!

I love Public Enema, that's the case for me. It's an underrated piece, one of the best of 90's, I think.

It's great to see some praise for tracks from No Prayer, as it's such a maligned album. I couldn't agree more about Public Enema being an underrated piece... I guess the title is a bit crude, and detracts a bit from the serious nature of the song... But the song itself is fantastic, and the bridge to the solo and the solo itself is just stunning.
