Interview with Final Frontier cover artist, Melvyn Grant

he sounds like an asshole

I think he would have to be. Now for some Generalizations and Stereotypes!

I read somewhere once, (vague enough for you? It was some sort or research survey thing.) That the hardest people to date/be in a relationship with, were first and foremost Musicians, second was artists. I don't know if that's true, but it would make sense. Creative imaginative people are always a little weird, always in their own world. Often socially awkward, and perhaps a little crazy. I think you almost have to be. Again not all are like that. But I think enough.

Mozzle, this description fits perfectly for me. Creative people are generally better alone. The more people gather, the more lonely they feel.

Well, on the March 4th, when the first depiction of the new Eddie was released, you could see 2 dental formations, which implicitly means there's 2 heads there; reading Melvyn's interview, it all makes perfect sense that Eddie will come out of its alien/reptilian shell and show his actual form at some point in the future.

I love Derek Riggs' Eddie's - a truly work of genius - but all Eddie's Melvyn painted are incredible (one got to be too donkey to want an artist to do his work just like another artist). Fear Of The Dark Eddie (one of my fave Eddie's. Fantastic job!) received as much bashing as the new Eddie (even 7th Son cover was destroyed at the time). The more the things change, the more they stay the same.

Jesus Christ. Read the comments. People are acting like Melvyn said "Riggs can suck it" or something. All he said was the he didn't care for Riggs' work!

Probably the same people who are still waiting Maiden to redo Powerslave.

Well, that doesn't necessarily apply to all artists or musicians, but it is true for a lot... including me lol. I focus on art and music more than anything else (other than family and my closest friends), so I guess I am a bit socially akward. I wouldn't change that for anything or anyone though, being an artist/musician is pretty much my life. I need it to keep from going crazy lol.

now, onto the subject: Grant isn't a bad artist by any means, but his work certainly doesn't live up to that of Riggs. I understand his desire to be different and put his own spin on art, but he chose to work with Maiden, so he should have known what was in store. With that said, I love the album cover for The Final Frontier, despite the drastic change in Eddie's appearance. I definetly think that Herve Monjeaud is carrying the torch that Derek Riggs lit.

You've never seen British teeth, have you?

I never would've thought that this guy Hervé Monjeaud was the painter of all these recent tours Eddie's. To me, it was all Riggs work. The guy's drawings are really good, but he's copying Riggs more than anything.

You see the difference of those who copy well and create well, now - when I first saw that poster from The Final Frontier North American tour, I suspected right away it was a Melvyn Grant drawing, which confirmed to be true, later.

That still doesn't show much respect. Ah well, Riggs might have said something worse about Grant in the past, who knows.

I also love the Fear of the Dark artwork. From then on, it went downhill.

Of course Melvyn doesn't like Riggs's work. From a technical aspect, Melvyn is a much, much better artist, especially than Riggs was in his early Maiden days. However, Riggs is a more…imaginative artist. I think he is superior in scope, but Grant is much better in his technique.
Also, that's why Riggs had to go. He stopped caring, and because he's not that technical, the art he did when he stopped giving a fuck began to suck. See everything after SSOASS that he did for Maiden…it's all pretty much crap. Grant is a professional, not a moody prima donna, who is more than likely to work to the specs Maiden gives him without worrying too much about the band's attitude.

You should read interviews with Riggs.  Drama queen.  He's excellent and I love the guy, but talk about bitchy.
that is how artists are. When I said Grant sounded like an ass it's because he seems ungrateful. For once I agree with some of the blabbermouth comments. If it wern't for Riggs he wouldn't be drawing for maiden. As for the cover the only mistake is the eddie.

He should be grateful to Maiden, not Riggs. And respect is earned, therefore he has no reason to respect Riggs unless they have met, which it doesn't sound like they have.
