How diverse is your music Library?

So as most of you have probably noticed I'm back to my usual 4-5 posts per day self. I have to thank my professors for that since they've eased up on the readings and workload since it is practically winter break. I must say I wanted to disconect myself completely from the board, but found it impossible still posting once a week or so. I just love this place [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

ANYWAY. I was looking through my iTunes music Library and noticed I have 3,233 songs, of which over a third (almost half) are "Metal". My first thought was "That's it?" I really thought I'd have more Metal tunes, but then, looking at the rest of my library it turns out no other genre comes close! the break down is something like this:
Metal: 1,398
Rock: 747
(Latin American) folk: 241
Pop: 188
Latin: 187
Alternative (& Punk): 102
R&B: 59
Soundtracks: 47
Jazz: 36
Country: 31
New Age: 21
Gospel: 19
Regae: 18
Classical: 15
Video Game: 13
Parody: 5
Blues: 1

So actually I have A LOT of metal [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]. Rock, alternative and pop (what is on most of radio) put together is 1,037 still about 300 short... I really need more non-metal...

For me, this kind of survey cannot be taken as when I rip Maiden or Children of Bodom cds etc, they are labelled as "Rock" so about 95% of my music is "Rock". The other 5 percent is Johnny Cash and Christy Moore [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

FAQ
These questions have all been asked to me by people who see my music collection.

Why did you do this?
This was basically a little joke when I started it. I was not sure where to put single files I got from magazine samplers or band websites, so I decided I'd stick with the genres named there. It eventually became the quest to seek for the most absurd genre. For a while, I had found it: Atmospheric Symphonic Brutal Death Metal; but alas, the mp3 link on the bands website was broken.

What the hell is God Metal?
A genre I made up for Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

Is this all just music?
No, a couple of files (lyrics sheets, album pictures and even some videos) slipped in there every once in a while. In general, however, it is almost entirely music.

Did you download this all?
Very little. Most of it was legally purchased.

Is this your entire music collection?
No. Many CDs and vinyl records were not ripped. My physical music collection consists of (to date) 272 CDs, LPs, DVDs, 7" and 12" singles and Maxi CDs. My most recent purchase is Halford- Live Insurrection.

Is the above list an accurate description of your musical taste?
No. I did not rip any Classical music, so this does not appear there at all; likewise, a couple of my favourites are not there because either I do not own them and listen to them from my parents or my brothers music collection, or they are on LP and I can't rip them.

Which artists do you have most files of?
Iron Maiden, Queen and Jethro Tull if I'm not completely wrong.

Which artists do you have complete discographies of?
Iron Maiden, Queen, BLAZE, Demons&Wizards, Led Zeppelin, Brian May, Majesty (I may have missed some). Almost complete are The Doors, Pink Floyd, Bruce Dickinson. Many albums haven't been ripped though.

Can I make fun of you because you have music of <insert genre label here>?
Do as you must. A lot of the music here was given to me by friends on compilation CDs, and I don't throw away music. I have categorized it all, but I haven't listened to it all yet.

Do you have a problem?
Yes, but that is none of your business.

Megadeth? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/bowdown.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'bowdown.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
That is quite impressive Perun, :looks through his own collectin: I have in total over 400 files including bootlegs, but I have only started a collection this year [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Megadeth is Thrash Metal. Very good Thrash Metal, but Thrash Metal nonetheless. I am considering moving BLAZE to God Metal though.

The trouble with categorizing music into genres is that it sometimes throws up odd results. For instance: on my iTunes, both AC/DC's Back In Black and Bob Marley come up as Blues.

Also, I recently downloaded some music from The Pogues, of which the different genres came up as:
Celtic, Folk, Rock, General Punk, Other, Alternative, Rock/Pop, Blues and finally Folk Irlandais. [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that some music doesn't fit into categories (not even when you make up the names Perun!).

I know what you mean, in most cases just thank the idiot that mislabeled it and to all the idiots that haven't corrected it. and of course I wasn't anal about it ( "Metal" includes all sub-genres, from power to death)
and I have relabeled a few (the Trans-siberian Orchestra from "holiday" to "rock" hehe) so yeah, it really depends what you do with it. that is why i find it interesting, how different view their music...

*sigh*
I'm a barbarian and reading Perun's post, quite ashamed (nah, wait, I'm just a normal individual [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--] ). My categories in order of frequency: Metal, Rock, Punk, Ska, Synth Pop, New Wave, Goth, Pop, Pop Rock, Dance, Ethnic, Blues, Blues Rock, Folk, Folk-Rock, Oldies, Latin, Jazz, Soundtrack, Nature, R&B, Rap and, yes, Children's.

Two comments:
Perun, I love the "Russian" category.
Acrobat, I love your new forum identity [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Sadly, the one question nobody ever asked me is: Are you serious about this?
To which I would have replied: No, this is a form of protest. I'm trying to show how ridiculous it is to categorize music by stuffing it into as many boxes as possible and creating new ones when other categories don't fit. But, nobody asked me so I won't give that answer [!--emo&:(--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'sad.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

The amount of thought and work you put into your protest tells me how serious you are about the subject [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--] . I find over-categorising for its own sake ridiculous but I must say that I do like categories. My mind just works that way, and not only in connection to music.

I doubt I could list my entire music collection.
I have really absurd genres.
For example: In my collection, the artist 'Scary Kids Scaring Kids' is listed as GeoffHoon-Core.

They must include Bootlegs, 894 Zappa tracks, he must be a reall nutter when it comes to him. How much memory does that take up on your harddrive SMX? I only have about 3gb or so used up from mp3s.

It's over 42 gigs of music. Not as much as you might think because I keep the bitrate down to 128 kbps. And the exact total right now is 11,158 files.

I have 1944 music files, including videos. They take 13.9 GB. I have 1821 music files, wich take up 9.28GB. That's a high number of songs/memory-usage... probably becuase I keep things usually at 192 kbps...

I know!! Let's have a competition to find out who's got the most songs on their hard drive!

Mine's 3846 songs!!
