Holiday Gift Ideas

If you're like me, often you are at a loss to come up with gift ideas for friends and loved ones.  This topic is for folks to brainstorm and share good gift ideas, such as a gift you would want, are planning to give or have received in the past.

Along the same lines -- I am told my brother has been wanting a wireless keyboard and mouse for his PC.  Any product recommendations, pro or con?   CNET seems outdated.

I'd stick with the mouse. In my experience, keyboards are a bit more personal - in the sense that you've got to find just the right fit for your hands. I'm still using an ancient Dell keyboard, despite having gotten newer ones with newer computers, because this keyboard fits my hands better than any others.

You might want to ask yourself: what did my gift target miss out on?
An example: my brother doesn't watch normal TV (he only uses his TV for DVDs and video games). But I know there are some TV series he likes to watch on DVD, like Heroes. So I'm going to try and find a series he likes but doesn't own yet.

@ SMX, I dunno if he has this, or has seen it, but there is a one season series called Firefly, which is a cult classic (Joss Whedon).  There was a feature film called Serenity, after the series was killed.  If he likes sci-fi at all, he may find this really interesting (one of my fav series/movies)

As to gifts... its always tough.  I got a friend a new Blu-ray player (good sales at Best Buy).  Other than that, I only do kid shopping... books, games, xbox, and the like.

Thanks SMX.  Also, I second Wasted's recommendation of Firefly/Serenity-- very entertaining, well written and acted, and as a bonus, the show introduced the world to Christina Hendricks, the redhead on Mad Men.  So, thank you, Firefly.  (Come to think of it, Mad Men is a good show for a DVD gift, too.  A LOT of people have missed out on that one, since it is on AMC.)

Thanks dudes for the idea. He does love sci-fi. I think he'll love that. I've heard a lot of good things about Firefly, but I've never seen it.

I just hope he doesn't read this thread.
I know he has occasionally looked at this forum to see what I'm posting, but I don't think he's done that recently.

And if he does read this thread:
Please dude... no soap this year.
(He knows what that means.)

According to my experience, I can say that Logitech has a good reliability, and Microsoft products are full of problems. If you arelooking to buy wireless peripherals for PC, go for Logitech. Easy to connect and use, high quality connection, fairly good ergonomics, good battery life.

About gifts. I always try to think about what happened during that year to the person I am buying the gift for. Did he move to a new city? Did he got any new interests? Are you expecting him to make a big move in his life (and you want to show your support)? The answers to these questions make buying a gift easier.

Thanks -- I ended up going with the Logitech Wave package.  Also got him a big "coffee table book" with lots of photos from the Hubble Telescope.

That is a great idea, the 'coffee table book'.  I picked up one for a nephew that is 'guitar gods' or something like it.

I think people can be subtle sometimes at what they want. My wife told me she wanted an exercise bike. We have had multiple exercise machines before. They end up being a coat rack. I'll come home from work and throw my coat on the Bowflex or Gazelle, and boom! That piece of home fitness equipment becomes the new place to hang our clothes. I know she really wants a Nintendo Wii. Everytime we go out to the store and they have one for a demo she'll sit and play it for a while, saying" we have to get one." I bought a Wii for her way back in October, because I knew how scarce they were last year. She is going to shit herself!!

Good call on the Wii!  I got one for my kids last xmas, and they still play it a lot!  I'm thinking of getting the Deca-sports for it.
