[attachmentid=368]Hi ..... I hope someone can help me here, I just found this forum while trying to get info.....looks like the place to me!!

I have been requested to do some custom artwork from a painting called 'The Clansman' I don't even know if it's an album cover or someone else's interpretation......
I was wanting to find the original artist to ask for permission to copy their work....
Any help would be much appreciated...... [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/bowdown.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'bowdown.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I don't know, but perhaps one of our collectors here could find that issue of the FC Magazine? I'd imagine the artist is given a credit somewhere, in small print.

If I had to guess: it doesn't look like Riggs to me. Melvyn Grant maybe?

Makes sense, didn't he do the cover for Virual XI? if he did it makes sense he did the cover for the singles and other artwork for that album.... ok just looked at the commentary and yes in fact it was Grant.

There's your answer, Sue J. The artist was Melvyn Grant. If you're able to contact him, he has a reputation as a friendly fellow (based on a few members here who have either met or had email exchanges with him). Good luck!

Edit: I just looked at Sue's website, and she's a damn fine artist. Most airbrushing I had previously seen always looked cheesy, but she's really good at it.

That's great...
Many thanks to both of you.......and thank you for the compliment Sinister....much appreciated....
I will come back and post the artwork, if I do get permission ..........

Well I just received a friendly e-mail from Mel Grant, and he isn't the artist, but thanks for putting me onto him anyway......I was mesmerised by his website, and had never come accross it before..........

So I'm still on the hunt....if anyone knows...
maybe some more names of iron maiden artists might help, I really appreciate any help you can give me....
I'll see how it goes, and if not I'll put up anohter post asking if someone has a copy of that magazine, as you suggested Sinister........
Thanks

Yeah, Im sure the little fella gets around a lot.......lol

I haven't found a way of contacting Derek Riggs, and my customer is adamant that's what he wants, so much as I don't like to do, I may have to do it without permission, and just put a credit to him when I post it on my website.....

Thanks again for your help....If anyone does know a way of contacting Derek Riggs it would be appreciated, but I don't think it's a goer......

Cheers
sue.........

the other person/people you could try contacting are iron maiden's management. Rod Smallwood's assistant (Rod is maidens manager) can be contacted angela.o'connor@sanctuarygroup.com or she can be telephoned (UK) on 020 7300 6535.

Taffy

Thanks Taffy, that could be very useful, as it seems that Iron Maiden may own the copyright anyway.........
thank you all for being so helpful....... [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Sue ,
Don't worry about obtaining a copyright to re-create a cd image...as long as your'e only doing a one off , its absolutely , 100% ok....

BTW : What do you use to coat your helmets on your site ?
I've used Krylon triple thick and have had alot of problems with it...let me know ...

Hi Tap, thanks for this information...I was just wondering what that is based on, and do you know if this is a legal fact......I would be very interested to know, so thanks in advance.....

I use U-Pol system 20 Super Clear......... It is a two pack clear requiring an activator, quite dangerous stuff, and you need the right equipment masks etc......
I wouldn't know about aerosol clears....
Do you do airbrush artwork, if so would be interested in seeing some..... [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Sue ,

Trust me...its just common sense...I've been doing artwork for more years than I can count and drew a number of original Eddies , KISS and other assorted pieces over the years that I ended up selling with no recourse...the biggest mistake I think an artist can make is contacting the management or the artist...just lets them know that you exist.

Its like the Ali piece you painted....One can say , legally , you needed to get the photographers rights to work from his photo or whatnot , but its pointless to be that paranoid.
Its a one shot illustration that youre copying , yeah?...Youre getting paid for your work for a single piece thats not being reproduced/printed...If every kid that drew Eddie in the 80's (me included) was/were breaking the law , there wouldnt be anyone out there buying concert tickets.

In a nutshell , do the painting and don't worry about it. [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Sounds like you shoot that toxic martini thru a spraygun of some kind ?

I just use a spray can of Krylon triple thick for my Football helmets...I learned that the problem I was having had to do whether or not the shipment that the can I bought came in travelled by truck over the Rocky Mountains...the elavation apparently messes with the chemical makeup and causes bubbles in the final coat....

Mystery solved !....lol
