Head or heart: how do you choose your Maiden?

With all the polls going on, I was wondering how you guys make your choices.

Ask me what’s the better song, Seventh Son, or Running Free, and I’d have to say 7th Son, hands down — it’s far more original, creative and complex. But ask me which is my favourite, I’d say Running Free — the riff gets me moving, and the chorus gets me singing. It’s just a lot more fun cranked in concert or in the car.

Do you guys tend to go more with emotional feel or creative respect in your rankings?

Heart.

I might recognize a part of the song for being intricate, complex and technically virtuous... but if it leaves me feeling bored and uninterested, then its technical and creative merits really don't mean much. I need to get excited by a piece of music to really like it.

Always heart.

pretty much like valacirca said... i might look into the techincality and creativity of a song later but it must get me exited and moving first to have my attention...
deffiently heart

I'm finding it quite hard to think of any Maiden song that fits this criteria if I'm honest...

Drifter... Lightning Strikes Twice... Quest For Fire... New Frontier... Justice of the Peace... The Assassin... Judgement of Heaven... Sea of Madness... Those are the kinds of songs that would fit the criteria for me.

(Is "Judgement" really misspelled on the Iron Maiden track, btw? :p)

I go with emotional feel in the lyrics.  Rainmaker and Dream Of Mirrors are emotional and are great songs. Love Prance

I'd say both.  My heart can feel the songs and the certainly grab me emotionally, but the sheer power, technicality, and showmanship of the band also blows my mind away.  No other band imo has that combination.

I'd say from the heart for sure however, if Maiden came up with a catchy 4 chord hit song, no matter how good the hook was I'd refuse to get into it.

It's all about the emotion. If Starblind, for instance, was emotionless, I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much as I do, despite its gorgeous lyrics. Same with Navigate the Seas of the Sun.

It's the reason I adore The Thin Line and Revelations.

BTW... Even though I said heart above, I must say that head and heart aren't necessarily exclusive when it comes to appreciating music :)

"Head or heart: how do you choose your Maiden?"

Yes, I choose with my head or my heart. I'd explain, but I am pretty sure most of you already understand what I mean.  :P

Both, although the heart generally takes precedence. For example, Isle of Avalon... As much as the technical aspects of this song blow me away, it's never found a place on my favorites list (and I'm also a huge Rush fan, fer chrissakes). I actually rate it among the bottom two on TFF.

Interesting topic!

For me, it's pretty much a mix of both. Complex/unique songs do attract me, as it shows the effort in musicianship and songwriting (Hallowed Be Thy Name, To Tame A Land, Dream Of Mirrors, the entire Seventh Son and AMOLAD albums etc.) i.e. the 'head aspect'. But take for example, The Book Of Souls album. My favourites are Speed Of Light and When The River Runs Deep, the same album which has The Red And The Black and Empire Of Clouds (do like them as well, specially the former), here comes the 'heart aspect', songs that click with you instantly no matter how simplistic they may be (The Final Frontier title track also comes to mind).

So basically that means, if Steve is 'head' of the band, Adrian is it's 'heart'? LOL!
