Great riffs in Metal

Kopfanatic

Trooper
I've just imported my cd collection onto my iPod, and listened to tracks I haven't heard for years.I thought I'd indulge myself and list some of the riffs that have kept me listening to metal for such a long time. These are in no particular order.

1) Buried At Sea-3rd track off Migration.Riff kicks in at 8mins 35 secs.If I could bottle up the ultimate doom riff this part would be it
2)Slayer- intro to Hell Awaits
3)Exhorder-intro to Death in Vain off Slaughter at the Vatican
4)Angel Witch-Angel of Death-particularly the bit that kicks in on 2mins 56secs
5)Ministry- Just one fix- off Psalm 69
6)Black Cobra- Omniscient -off Bestial-Great song, best part kicks in at 1min 23 secs.
7)Black Sabbath-Symptom of the universe
8)Mastodon-Seabeast -off Leviathan.- best part at 3mins 31secs
9)Judas Priest-Victim of Changes
10)Black Sabbath-Into the Void
11)Celtic Frost-Procreation of the Wicked-off Morbid Tales
12)Cathedral-Serpent Eve -off Forest of Equilibrium particularly the bit on 5mins 46secs
13)Black Label Society-Phoney Smiles and Fake Hellos - off Alchohol fuelled Brewtality
14)Disembowellment-intro to the Tree of Life and Death-off Trancendence into the Peripheral
15)Most stuff by Evoken.

Hopefully some of you may like to compare. There are obviously many others, but these particularly stand out for me, and cover most of my 30 odd year musical journey.

The intro to Slayer's Hell Awaits is one of the very best intros ever that wasn't For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Megadeth - Set The World Afire
Megadeth - Wake Up Dead
Megadeth - Lucretia

Testament - Burnt Offerings
Testament - Sins of Omission
Testament - D.N.R. (insanely wild song)

Metallica - Whiplash (simple beauty)
Metallica - Phantom Lord
Metallica - Blackened

when it comes to riffing, thrash bands are the best in my book.
