First they have an interesting Eurovision contestant (Lordi) and now they have metal in their "Idols" show (national television!)

Finnish Heavy Metal 'Idol' Performs IRON MAIDEN On National TV; Video Available - Mar. 11, 2007

A video clip of 22-year-old Finnish heavy metal singer Ari Koivunen performing a version of IRON MAIDEN's "The Evil That Men Do" on the Finnish TV talent show "Idols" has been posted online at YouTube.com.

Koivunen reportedly had a cold during the show's taping, but managed to move on to the next round of the finals anyway.

Ari is from Lahti, the Finnish town that has given birth to such metal acts as PROFANE OMEN, BEFORE THE DAWN and ENTWINE. One of his hobbies is "Hevikaraoke" (Finnish "heavy metal" karaoke); in 2005 he won the Finnish karaoke championships. Among his favorite bands are IRON MAIDEN, RAINBOW, DEEP PURPLE, DIO, PROFANE OMEN and HELLOWEEN.

The "Idols" program is broadcast in Finland every Thursday on MTV3.

Here he does Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers:

Finland rock!

This guy has a pretty good voice too, but the most amazing thing is that he's performing Iron Maiden for a mainstream audience/program and manages to continue. All he needs is a little more stage presence (jumping around, getting people to join in, etc) and he'll make it big. Hopefully we'll get to see more of him in the future (own band?). Good luck Ari!  :ok:

The backing band is tight.  His vocals get better as they go along, but he starts off poorly (although no worse than Bruce on a bad night!)

I seriously hope this guy does well.  It must take a lot of balls to go on a show where the audience and judges want someone to do some commerical crap (*cough*UKXFACTOR*cough*) and do stuff like Deep Purple and Maiden...I also like his rendition of Billy Joel's 'Piano Man'.

Why would people despise Finland?

Good luck to this guy and good on him for choosing such songs, but he ain't the sort of act that the people footing the bill for his record contract (assuming he wins) want. But, for him to make it, he really needs to start from the bottom and make his own music - rather than win a karaoke competition or some reality TV show.

And just for the hell of it, one class act and one very good act from Finland:
Amorphis
...and Oceans.

I was referring to the music.  For every person who exonerates Finland for the bands it has produced in the last few years, there's another who can't stand bands like CoB and Ensiferum.

I think the guy was excellent in the bridges and chorusses !  :)

Stratovarius is another big name from Finland !

Don't forget to add Nightwish to the pile. All that Kalmah/Norther/Wintersun nonsense is extremely overdone in both production and their attempts to appeal to the power metal kiddez. Satan forbid there'd be a bit of rawness or feedback. Anyways, we're missing quite a few other good Finnish bands.

I thought that the singer was incredible during The Evil... but Ian Gillan's original of Perfect Strangers is better.  Nothing against the singer; he's passionate and can carry a wide range of vocals.  To see such non-pop songs on "IDOL" show is incredible.  I guess Finns have balls when it comes to music.  :D

Yup, Finland rocks!  I live there!  :yey:  As far as I know, it's the only country where AMOLAD has sold platinum so far  :)

I saw both of those on television when he sang them.  Not that I watch Idols otherwise.  My bedroom just happens to be situated right next to the living room.  I think he sang Perfect Strangers better, but both were pretty good.  I'd actually bet that he wins the competition.

The guy is pretty good. I didn't like it at first - maybe he just got better as it went along, or maybe I'm so accustomed to Bruce that any other singer doesn't (initially) sound quite right. But by the second verse, he was nailing it pretty well. He's definitely got a good voice. He sounds like he might do well in some kind of power metal band.

Yeah, he started a bit weakly but then he got it right - with some mistakes of course - but you know - I wish I had his vocal range, yeah :-) I wish him winning the show. And I wish our Czech version of Idol would someday have this kind of music too :-) The heaviest we got was the Final Countdown by Europe as I recall, but the guy who sung that won the show that year :-)

I love that song lol, good cd actually. Well, if you like that kind of 80's cheese, which I do.

Funny how this overdone excuse actually made me think you watch the show.

:) It does, now that I look back at it.  But it's a real reason and not an excuse.  You don't have to believe it, I have no "reputation" here to preserve anyways.

That was awesome, thanks Forostar. Is he the resident Metalhead of Idol? what are the other contestants doing? also, his performances are solid, but he doesn't seem to be a judge favorite. I only understood "lenny kravits" and obviously what the last, apperantly american, judge said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVt92KkiYiY
