Iron Maiden are not exactly notorious for making ballads, but during the decades they've been hitting the stage from here to eternity (Bad pun. You may toss the tomatoes now) now, a few have slipped into their discography. Most of those are described as "semi-ballads", "power-ballads" and whatnot, but at least by Maiden standards, they are rather soft. So cast your vote for the song that melts your heart and empties your lighter the most.

My own vote goes to the most recent one, Out Of The Shadows. It has the most poignant lyrics of the lot, and it was just amazing live.
Truth is, Prodigal Son, No Prayer For The Dying, 2 AM, Como Estais Amigos, Blood Brothers and Journeyman deserve that vote just as much.

I chose not to include Strange World, because I don't consider it a ballad. If a majority disagrees with me, I will add it.

Hmm, I immediately thought you had forgotten "Strange World".

The most balladish songs of Maiden ballads! ;)

LOL, I voted for Wasting love, the lyrics are very touchy for me, espêcially the first lines

I disagree

I think Blood Brothers is too "powerful" to be a ballad; I wouldn't call it exactly soft, either.  But by Maiden standards, maybe...  But my vote goes to it anyway.

Hmmm...I'm torn between 'Out Of The Shadows' and 'Como Estais Amigos'.

The former is brilliantly laid-back and pensive, with some excellent leads throughout courtesy of Murray, and a wonderful vocal performance by Bruce.  The latter showcases Blaze's excellent, strong, deep singing voice, and is one of Maiden's more sensitive songs.  I vote for CEA.

I like 2AM - it is so bloody depressing and fits the darkness of The X Factor brilliantly. It really is one of those songs that can send you in to a downward spiral of complete depression if you have any sort of empathy with the teller of this sad story - if you're not already there. It makes you think just how bad loneliness is.

Prodigal Son and Blood Brothers are worthy contenders also.

I'm in the same boat as Raven: I can't choose easily between OOTS and CEA.

To me, the essence of a successful ballad is not in the complexity of the music, but rather in the emotion of the delivery. This is a bit of a change for me, since I'm a progressive rock fan who loves complex music. But most of my favorite pop ballads are ones with simple music and emotional vocals.

On that basis, it's got to be CEA.

OOTS has absolutely brilliant music. I heard it again just a few hours ago, and it amazed me again. But I didn't get any huge sense of emotion from Bruce's delivery there. Not that he was horrible - he just didn't deliver like Blaze does on CEA.

In fact, I'm one of those people who prefers VXI over TXF, and CEA is the main reason why. TXF has brilliant songs, but none match the emotional power of CEA for me.

If the amount of acronyms in this post is confusing anyone: TFB.

It was a tough choice btwn Out Of the Shadows and Como Estais Amigos. But OOTS wins cuz I love Davey's "mega solo" the whole way through! Reminds me of H's stuff at the end of Stranger In A Strange Land, without the fadeout. I wish that song wouldn't have had a fadeout!

A man that casts no shadow has no soul...

Then the sweet intro to Benjamin Breeg  :D Does Dave do that?

hard choice here as prodigal son is my favourite song on Killers, Como Estais Amigos is my favourite from Vritual Xi and Journeyman is a real highlight from Dance Of Death but i went for No Prayer For The Dying. Just a great all round song and the lyrics are very good also.

Despite really enjoying VXI for a long time, I never really listened to CEA until I was rather into Maiden.  Once I did start really listening to it, the raw emotion in there really struck me.  Blaze's voice is so incredibly powerful, so incredibly mournful, that it does move you to tears - despite the chorus.

Blood Brothers gets my vote, since it has that magically beautiful atmosphere, pleasingly ballsy guitar work that makes you feel fuzzy, and those lyrics that make you contemplate..

Blood Brothers has special sentimental value for me so of course I voted for it, but Out of the Shadows comes in a close second.

Strange World is not my favourite ballad but I find it strange that it's not featured in this poll.
In what poll could it fit, then? Favourite death metal song by Iron Maiden? Favourite 2 word song?
Favourite World song? Favourite Strange song?

So, out of protest, no vote from my side here (it probably would have gone to NPFTD).

Blood brothers is my favourite Maiden ballad, it has more emotional substance than the others in my opinion, though Out of the Shadows and Wasting Love come dangerously close.

Well, I am torn between two songs. Como Estais Amigos and Blood Brothers. When it comes to this kind of songs, the lyrics are even more important than for rockin' openers like The Wicker Man or Invaders. Both these songs touch a string inside me somewhere that play a beutiful note. The rest don't, at least not to the same degree.

Where Como Estais Amigos emphasizes how we should put conflict behind and try to go on as friends, and how all soldiers really are in the same boat (being sent to fight somebody just like themselves for a cause they may or may not find important), Blood Brothers is the personal one relating to going on with life after losing somebody close to oneself. When considering the circumstances under which Steve Harris wrote the song, my admiration for both Harris and the song grows.

In addition, Blood Brothers has some great melodies. I would have voted Out of the shadows if the music only was to decide, but the sum of great melody and really powerful lyrics tips it in favour of Blood Brothers.

Wasting Love, no question, that song floored me since the first listen and it is of the few that demands my full attention every time I listen to it. Just brilliant. Blood Brothers was a distant second.

Easy choice for me: Blood Brothers! It manages to transfer Steve's emotions onto the recording. Bruce interprets the lyrics extrordinary well, and the guitarplaying's amazing (especially Janick's solo, it's a real masterpiece. He really should play more composed solos like that one). For me, the song is perfect in every aspect. It's so moody with great melodies and drumming.

My choice is between:
1. No Prayer for the Dying -- The rough vocals really work here with the sad, poignant lyrics and the wicked solo.
2. Como Estais Amigos -- It took me a while to get into this song but now I love it, especially Blaze's sad voice and the bass.
3. Blood Brothers -- This one is the most emotional and has the best bass.  It gets my vote.

@ Perun:  How come you chose not to include 'Strange World'?  I'm curious.  This would be my last vote if it was included though.

I voted Prodigal son today, but i could easily choose other song in the past or in the future.

Prodigal Son - Have one of the strongest guitar solos of the entire Maiden catalog, imho. The guitar is almost crying.  :(  I was impressed with it since i started listening to Maiden.
Wasting Love - I quite like it, and i don´t think it is a weak song.
No Prayer For The Dying - Superb start, but the second part of the song is not that strong.
Como Estais Amigos - The lyrics ruin the song, imo.
2 AM  - I "need" to revisit the x-factor soon enough...  :S
Blood Brothers - I don´t consider ir a Ballad.
Journeyman  - Brilliant acoustic sound.
Out Of The Shadows  - Great song.
Strange World - Actually, i don´t think it is a weak song, but comparing it to the others is not so strong.
