Do you consider the following to be metal?

IronDuke

Ancient Mariner
Topic says it all. A friend and I were discussing what bands can be considered 'metal.'
Most we automatically agreed on, like Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica, etc.

But some are more ambiguous. What about Rammstein, AC/DC, etc?

AC/DC is more like Hard Rock - it is after all based heavily on blues riffs, and most metal to my knowledge isn't. I'm sure if you asked the boys from AC/DC what genre they were, they would say Rock 'n' Roll (it ain't noise pollution, you know), or something more along that line.

I've also heard Led Zeppelin called heavy metal, but can a band with songs such as Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and Thank You (to name just two) really come under the banner 'metal'? I don't think so.

I've heard Rammstein called Industrial Metal - I'm not really au fait with all the metal sub-genres, but I've always considered Rammstein to be metal.

OK, good point, but I'll reiterate my point. These non-metal Sabbath songs occur at most once an album (correct me if I'm wrong, please), but Zeppelin albums will have folk songs, blues and country etc., side by side. True, Led Zeppelin were integral to the formation and development of heavy metal, but if you talk of influences, then you can trace it back to The Beatles, and further to Buddy Holly and Little Richard and the like, and they sure ain't metal!

I agree with you about the difficulties and dangers of putting bands under different banners - I've won't listen to a band just because they're said to be in a particular genre. I like listening to Motorhead and AC/DC, and don't really care what people call their music.

I'd say Rammstein are metal. Industrial metal.

With the whole true and false metal thing. If I see a band as false metal, they aren't metal, even if their 'genre' says they are. e.g. Korn who are nu-metal, they are technically metal but to me they are offensive to metal and therefore aren't... Yeah, this is what I call subjective judgment.

I like most music with infectious guitars in it, except for Celine Dionesque rock attempts. I like it how Bruce tries to convince every guest in his BBC show that they play Metal. Unlike Bruce, my perception of Metal ends before Rammstein or AC/DC. But then again, what do I know [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Don't be so sure. The infestation could be spreading. What if Slime got a job teaching English to poor South American youngsters?
