I'm watching on TV as I write, the 39th Parliament of Canada has voted itself out of existence.
The Conservatives, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois have passed a vote of no-confidence in the minority Liberals by a vote of 171 to 133.
This is the first time in my country's history that a straight vote of no confidence has passed (usually minority gov'ts are defeated on matters of supply - money bills)
I'm feeling quite excited, this is how parliamentary democracy is supposed to work. Without a shot being fired, without people being rounded up and imprisoned, and without and intimidation or illegal tactics, we have overthrown an unpopular government which has lost the confidence of Canadians.
Prime Minister Martin will have to go to the Governor General tomorrow morning and formally aask her to dissolve the 39th Parliament and declare a general election.
