Demilich

Is anybody here into them? I think they're amazing! [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /] For those of you who aren't familiar, Demilich feature impossibly obtuse song titles ("When The Sun Drank The Weight Of Water", "Raped Embalmed Beauty Sleep", to name two -- and several other titles are much longer), very low-pitched gurgled death vocals, and and a constantly changing array of riffs. Though their overall sound has traditional death metal roots, their complex arrangements and musicianship definitely make them stand out from the crowd. At times this uniqueness is quite effective, while at other times the riffs and songs tend to blur, leaving one with the feeling that perhaps a few more standard song structures would tighten up the overall effect.

Due to the difficulty involved in finding any of their material, All Demilich stuff (releases, covers, and the like) can be downloaded for free here. (I would pay if I could find their stuff, believe me.) So go on you blasphemous moongoats of the north! What are you waiting for? [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /] Give 'em a try and see! (well hear to be literal ^^)

now, before I download them all, I want to know if I'll be into them, what tracks do you recommend to get an overall feel?

Anything from Nespithe will do. Maybe the instrumental Erecshyrinol to get the music style right. (Most of these songs are in a fairly similar vein) The vocals might be hard to stomach so you will definitely need to read the lyrics while listening along to the songs. Oh, and in terms of technicality, it's to do with the shifting riffs and odd time structures, not the "deedly doodly diddly" type of fretboard masturbation "technicality".

ok, I've listened to more tunes and They're ok. Now, I'm a power metal kinda guy myself, so saying it's ok is a lot comming from me [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":D\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" /]

When The Sun Drank The Weight Of Water

War of elements
Water against the Sun
The Sun leading a battle of the war
that will never be done

Sucking the weight of water
Bringing its weakness back
Now possessing an important weapon
The weight that all molecules lack

The water gets up to the sky
People flying as wind goes by
The seeds of
their hate never die
Everything's too late
The earth will be gone
All because of the rage of the Sun

My, my aren't these some interesting lyrics! I definitely think that Nespithe is one of my favourite death metal albums. Here's something you might not know: Nespithe means "The Spine", and Erecshyrinol means "No Lyrics Here". They can be decrypted by grouping the letters in three, starting at the end of the word, and reversing the order of those groups.

Wow, I never noticed that.  About Erechsyrinol, I mean.

Well, BD got me into Demilich a few months back, and I have to say it is, to date, one of the more bizaare musical experiences I have encountered (second only to being blown away by the opening riff of Sepultura's Inquisition Symphony played on a certain Finnish cello ;)).  It takes some getting used to, but some of the songs just stick in your mind more than others.  I would agree with BD's point that the complexity of their music sometimes works against them, but after you've listened to it a few times, you'll appreciate the almost-jazzy timings and the progressiveness of the artists.  Progressive doesn't just mean you can play a scale up and down the fretboard at 400bps, you know! ^_^

Check out this review. Boris gave a good review of Nespithe. Quite odd, considering that he's a thrash metal fanboy.

Holy.... fucking.... shit. - 72%

This album is just absolutely completely and utterly fucking fucked up. Does it own me? Not quite. It's one of those albums for Falco to go gaga over simply because it's so different - and yes, it is well executed, and good at what it does, it's just not quite my bag.

For the most part this is pretty midpaced, especially in the riff construction, which is death metal that occasionally teases with some quicker, thrashier parts... and some more typical death metal type riffs. Lead guitar goes in and out, adding to the complete chaos. And to top it off, we've got the vocals. Really hard to describe. Not extreme in the typical way - doesn't sound forced or yelling or anything. It's like he is talking, but through his fucking intestine or something.

Just really damn weird. If they had made the riffs thrashier - well, ya know, then it wouldn't be Demilich, but it would totally rule. (Okay then it would be Morbid Angel's "Thy Kingdom Come" demo, only more guttural in the vocals and still more fucked up in the riff construction) This way, it's just not an album that you can bang your fucking head against the stage to. But still, the fact that I don't completely hate it, like most death metal, that means it does have some really redeeming virtues.

Just has to be heard to be believed, really. If you like death metal, then you will positively dig the fuck out of this. I mean, Cannibal Corpse can't hold a candle to this... or Morbid Angel or any of the rest of the non-thrashy typical death metal bands out there.

Oh, Silky about the whole prog thing, I think you've taken enough shots at Dragonforce already. ;)

Yeh, I saw that review ages ago.  Quite strange, like you said.  And did I mention the name of a band?  Did I?!  No!  Why do you think I have some kind of obsession with criticising DragonForce's lack of creativity, even if they....gahh!

Actually, when I said that, I was also thinking of Dream Theater, who are frequently praised for their proggyness, and while I would agree that stuff like Images & Words owns my ass, listening to some of the material from Train Of Thought just shows how contrived and pretentious prog can often be.

NP Sepultura - To The Wall
Wow.... -_-

Calm down already Silky, have a cookie. ;)

Anyways, here are some pictures of Demilich playing at the recent Maryland Deathfest.

I find it quite odd that they were playing with crappy nu-goregrind and slam death metal bands like Skinless and Cattle Dec(r)apitation. Oh, and for extra kvlt points, can you guess the name of the band on Antti's t-shirt? :p
