One may think this belongs in the 'now watching', but alas, a lot of people believe this will happen -- that the world will end supposedly according to the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012, that somehow this combines with a Sumerian legend of a runaway planet collidiing with earth.  (Boy, they had hella good imaginations, those Sumerians.  I gotta hand it to them.  There's so much UFO/paranormal stuff that gets connected to them, you wonder how they had time to build UR, or think up new irrigation systems, or a writing system.  Overachievers.)

What do you think of this end of the world prediction?

Nasa has an article debunking this:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091109/sc ... aceoffbeat

and they do note quite cleverly that this was actually supposed to happen in May 2003.  It didn't, though, obviously!, so the disaster mongers moved it to a new date that was determined to be the final one of the Mayan calendar.  But it isn't according to experts -- the Mayan calendar keeps going into a new period.

I hate these disaster scenarios; life is tragic and crazy enough.  But some people live off them, or for them.  Anybody out there getting your underground shelter ready?  :P

I wonder if you turned over their calander if there would be more dates on the back.  Whenever I run out of room on my paper, I'll write on the back.  :smartarse:

Otherwise, I'd still like to see the flick about it.

It's 2220, not 2012

Some weeks ago a group of scientists said it's gonna be 2220. (There was a miscalculation in the prediction with the Maya calendar).

From the Dutch scientific magazine "Natuurwetenschap & techniek" (Nature, science & technics) a translation of the article by translate.google.com -> click

edit: Damn, that translation sucks (let SMX not see this!). I hope to find a better English article.

Here a summary I found on some forum:

Thought, for what little 2012-prophets know is that the GMT-correlation over the past ten years under heavy fire has come to be examined by modern astronomers, archaeologists and a few hobby using mathematical. The final blow was arguably the thesis that nature scientist Andreas Fuls three years ago doctorate at the Technical University Berlin. Fuls pointed out that the GMT-correlation not consistent with a preserved Mayan table on which the positions of Venus are listed. And so there is more, such as inscriptions and objects in time of Goodman, Martinez and Thompson were not detected or outdated. By adding to it all, comes from a very different Fuls dating: one that 208 years has shifted. The end of the long count by the correlation is only about two centuries, at 21, 22 or December 23, 2220. "It is the only option," says Fuls if you ask him about it.

No, I don't believe in exact predictions of doom, but I find it entertaining that scientists outdo 2012 believers. :)

It's all bullshit.  Penn and Teller say so.  Well, Penn says so, and Teller nods his head in agreement.

How many times has the world ended already?  I lost count.

As far as natural disaster movies, they're like chick flicks, formulaic and eye-rolling, but without the hot chicks and with cheesy effects.
EDIT: Let's not forget the bad storylines.

That's going to be my parents' 33rd wedding day. Damn.

People have also been waiting for Jesus to return for about 2000 years  :yey:

I'm sure THIS doomsday prediction will be true...

The good thing is that I'll never need to pay off my mortgage.   :yey:

wouldn't that be nice!  I think the bank is gonna follow me to the afterlife....

Did'nt we already go through this with Y2k? And Halley's Comet? And some planetary alignment during the early eighties?

Well, I can tell you that 2010 (the movie) is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. They sometimes forget that you need a story to go along with the special effects...

Yep, and the earth shall become a flaming abyss.
I wonder who really believe in that stuff.

Well, there is a certain weight in this theory. People have been researching this 2012 stuff for couple of decades.

I suppose the best thing to do is find a chick who believes in this stuff and give her salvation before the world ends.  :innocent:

And exactly how many of you actually read some worthy research on the subject?

Even if you would believe this. => Dunno if you read my post but the calculations were wrong.
