Did anyone see the info today?  Chile got hit by an 8.8, and now Hawai'i has to brace for a tsunami.  MSN lists 145 dead from the quake, and I haven't read a lot, but I'd assume that the infrastructure was better than in Haiti.

It looks like the tsunami has not yet hit, and people are saying it probably won't now, but we will see soon, I guess.

Chile is better off than Haiti, but it is still Latin America we're talking about, the best off they can Upper Third World nation... Yes, I just coined the phrase :p

I did catch a little of it last night, haven't seen much else since.

I haven't seen much lately (updated) since yesterday.  Like LC said, the tsunami rolled in 'softly' to Hawai'i, and seemed to cause no real problems.  Nice phrasing, Onhell-- and I think you are correct in the fact that they are still 'third world'.  But, and I don't mean this to sound cold, the death toll seemed low for the magnitude of the quake.

I think that has more to do with the utter abject poverty of Haiti and the fact that Port Au Prince was directly struck.

Sure, that makes sense.  What a mess they have there.
I was mistaken in the death toll I saw posted-- that was an early estimate.  Last I saw, it was up over 700 (presumed?) dead.

How sad it is to bear when I learn Porto au Prince is no more and when again I learn the height of devastation in Chile. It hurts. People from all over the world are to stand by the hapless humanity seized under the wrath of our good old earth which has perhaps got annoyed for what we have done to injure her for centuries.

While I share the sympathy for the victims of the earthquakes, I find this utter BS. Earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tsunamis, tornadoes and avalanches have been around far longer than humanity. Yes, the idea that disasters happen as punishment for "the evil that men do" is common - a certain US preacher comes to my mind as well.

Earthquakes happen because the different pieces of the Earth's crust are moving relative to each other - not smoothly and continuously, but often in jerks. These are experienced as earthquakes. Nothing to do with Her Majesty Gaia and that kind of pseudo-religious rubbish.

Sorry for the rant, but I get provoked when I read that kind of stuff. People are not to blame for earthquakes. People are to blame for not being prepared for earthquakes.

You think that the earth is conscious?  Getting revenge on us?  Sounds like the Old Testamaent style God.

I don't think he was bein literal... regardless, the news on this has gone from the specific incident in Chile, to what has seemed to be a parade of earthquakes worldwide. Haven't heard much in recent days, but a week ago or so it was still "top" news.
