In conjunction with Perun's Rock Timeline, I have decided to make a thread to debate what the best year for music was/is.

In my humble opinion, I consider 1986 to be this year, namely for the release of a few major thrash metal abums. I know some of you may call me a cheesy 80s "trash" fanboy, but these truly are classics. These great albums include:
  • Master of Puppets - Metallica
  • Peace Sells - Megadeth
  • Reign in Blood - Slayer
  • Somewhere in Time - Iron Maiden (not thrash but still in the list)
  • Pleasure to Kill - Kreator
Feel free to comment and make your own suggestions as to "the best year" for music. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

Well, as you can see in my list, 1986 is the one year with the most entries. However, my personal favourite years are either 1970, 1973 or 1980.

All three years saw the release of some of my favourite albums:

1970
"Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath
"Led Zeppelin III" by Led Zeppelin
"Let It Be" by The Beatles

1973
"Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd
"Queen" by Queen
"Houses Of The Holy" by Led Zeppelin

1980

"Heaven And Hell" by Black Sabbath
"Iron Maiden" by Iron Maiden
"British Steel" by Judas Priest
"Back In Black" by AC/DC
"The Game" by Queen

Considering 1980 is also the year most commonly associated with the NWOBHM, I think I'll go for 1980.

1986 thrash metal eh Conor? You forgot these:

Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Possessed - Beyond The Gates
Sepultura - Morbid Visions
Sodom - Obssessed By Cruelty
Nuclear Assault - Game Over
Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark

Some of these border death/black territory but they still thrash like hell. [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

A friend and I had an argument over this some time ago. He said 1969 because of The Doors and Led Zeppelin II. I said 1986 for the before mentioned reasons. I have since discovered much new (actually old) music and have dicided to change to 1969 or 1970. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band and Black Sabbath is my third favorite band, so both of those years had great music. I can't decide which is better.

I know it's not quite what you're talking about, but how about 2006 as the best year for live music?

We have Iron Maiden (obviously), Def Leppard, The Eagles, Whitesnake, Motorhead, and Monsters of Rock, which includes Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Journey, Ted Nugent, Thunder and Queensryche. In addition to this we have Roger Waters playing the whole of Dark Side of the Moon, and The Who playing in Hyde Park.

Now I realise this is just the UK I'm talking about, but it's a fantastic array of bands, especially notable because this is the last opportunity people will get to see most of these bands.

Had a butchers through my collection and found the largest collection of albums I highly rate where from 1989:

Acid Reign - The Fear
The Almighty - Blood Fire & Love
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Armored Saint - Saints Will Conquer
Blue Murder - Blue Murder
Carcass - Symphonies Of Sickness
Coroner - No More Color
D.R.I. - Thrashzone
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Gamma Ray - Heading For Tomorrow
Helloween - Live in the UK
Junkyard - Junkyard
Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Metal Church - Blessing In Disguise
Ministry - The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste
Morbid Angel - Alters Of Madness
Mordred - Fool's Game
Mortal Sin - Face Of Despair
Nuclear Assault - Handle With Care
Onslaught - In Search Of Sanity
Overkill - The Years Of Decay
Re-Animator - Condemned To Eternity
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Sea Hags - Sea Hags
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
Skid Row - Skid Row
Slammer - Work Of Idle Hands
Testament - Practice What You Preach
Venom - Prime Evil
Virus - Lunacy
W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children
Wolfsbane - Live Fast, Die Fast
Wrathchild America - Climbin' The Walls
Xentrix - Shattered Existence

Ironically that was Maidens "year off".

Best year for music hu? hmmm how about when the first human-like furry creature decided to bang a stick on a skull 'cause it sounded "cool" and that inspired anohter to search for a kvlt and gr1m sound.... THAT was the best year in music.

So it's 1986 thrash for you aswell then? [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

Have to say '86 thrash really does it for me, the close second being '88
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil ::
Testament - The New Order
Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare
D.R.I - Four Of A Kind
Flotsam And Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace

Non thrash 1988
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Manowar - Kings Of Metal

Anyway, what do you guys think 2006 will be like. Not just for the live performances as National Acrobat said, but also for the studio releases:

DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime 2
Iron Maiden - "The Majesty of Gaia" [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]
Metallica - new release
The Who - new release
Manowar - new release
Blind Guardian - new release
Megadeth - new release

And a few others that I can't think of right now. If the year lives up to the hype, it's bound to be fantastic [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\";)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"wink.gif\" /]

Well, 2004 and 2005 were really good years for power metal anyway and I think this year is looking pretty good too. To pick A year is really hard, I like so many bands and genres that I can't really pick one year to say "oh yeah that was THE best." For Metal, just thrash, power or anything really.

Both Onslaught and Celtic Frost have also got new releases this year. Celtic Frost may no live up to expectations, so I've heard, but I am particularly looking forward to the Onslaught release.

Also I have heard that Xentrix are gigging this year with the original line-up (i.e. Shattered Existence line up). Could they be releasing new stuff this year?

Both the Forbidden and Testament releases you’ve mentioned are excellent albums and I rate them highly (useless fact, Forbidden Evil was the first CD album I ever brought). Also the DRI and Flotsam & Jetsam albums are very good also (stonkin' cover of Saturday Nights Alright).

Maidens release needs no words of praise from me, best album they did IMO.

Forbidden Evil is probably my favourite thrash album of all time, but I also love Twisted Into Form. I have both on vinyl signed by Paul Bostoph, the coolest guy on the planet [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /]

Paul sure is a great drummer. He did a good job on Divine Intervention, but it's a shame his skills were wasted on the next 2 Slayer albums after that, which were worthless piles of crap.

He's my favourite thrash drummer and fortunately I don't have any of his Slayer stuff as it would just anger me to hear his talent wasted. Fortunately he's teamed up with Exodus now, and doing an amazing job, even better live [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":D\" border=\"0\" alt=\"biggrin.gif\" /]
