Beslan tragedy

While some tragedies are caused by nature, others are work of man. On the 1st of September 2004, about 1200 hostages were taken by Chechen terrorists in Beslan, southern Russia. The hostages came to the small town school to celebrate the first day of school, called Knowledge Day. The hostage drama turned into a bloody inferno after Russian troops intervened. Some 330 victims, more than half of them children, were killed [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/mad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'mad.gif\' /][!--endemo--] .

Today, parents of the Beslan victims claim that the incompetence of Russian officials made the bloodshed worse. Chechen leaders say that their heavily-armed rebels were let into Russia by Russian intelligence in order to be captured. Moscow denies both accusations.

(Just thought this might be a good way of realising the futility of the Ozzfest Incident, as well as some other incidents)

When the tragedy happened, last year, I posted a thread on it. It was deleted, stating that the purpouse of this forum is not to post on politics.

More note-worthy would be to remember that tommorow is the 66th comemoration of the begining of WWII, the most gruesome conflict n human history... let's think about what happened, s that it may never happen again...

True, although I would argue about the "more noteworthy" bit.

There've been political threads here. Let's see what happens to this one [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

If we have to start a thread whenever disaster strikes, whether it's natural or due to sheer human stupidity, we'll end up being an annex of CNN... [!--emo&-_---][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sleep.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'sleep.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

All you have to do is delete the thread.
If you'd rather like a discussion, Beslan is a particular story that strikes me as a symbol of our era. Of how conflicts are drawn more and more toward innocent civilians, in more and more wicked ways.
Which brings us to what Ace says.
"Let's think about what happened, that it may never happen again"

If we learned from History, it wouldn't repeat itself, would it? [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/huh.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'huh.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

But we'll never learn [!--emo&:(--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/sad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'sad.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Taking children hostage in a school isn't the way I'd go about winning the hearts and minds of the world over to my nutjob cause. The people who did this were terrorists of the worst kind and got a far better death than they deserved.

That being said, perhaps the Russian army could have handled the situation better. The policy they have when it comes to hostage situations seems to be one in which more civillians get killed than rescued. (Beslan, the theatre a few years ago, etc)
Negotiating with terrorists, on the other hand, only encourages them to continue doing crap like this.

In other words, terrorism sucks and nobody wins because of it.

Now the eternal question: where can this lead and what's to be done to stop it.
And here we are, the dog chasing its tail [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/rolleyes.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'rolleyes.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Hatred and violence fuel more hatred and violence. Look at the terrorist actions of the IRA or those of (supposedly) Al-Qaeda, look at the Middle-East, look at egg-throwers at Maiden concerts because Bruce is a cocky git who can't keep his mouth shut.

At least on this forum, offending threads can be deleted before they can degenerate! [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

It was discussed in another thread. We need a world dictatorship for the good of the people. [!--emo&^_^--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Exactly! [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

May I remind you, gentlemen, that already Cicero knew democracy was the best possible solution?

Yes, and Churchill said it was the worst form of government (except for all the others that had been tried so far). [!--emo&:P--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Nope. As you already posted once, Cicero thought that the Republic was the best possible sollution.

To get back on the topic briefly, I remember how I was in a school last November, to do some X-Mas stuff with kids from my work back then. They were making X-Mas cards, and to provide a clean desk surface, we gave them old newspapers to do their work on. One of them had a picture of Beslan, with a terrorist holding a child at gunpoint, on the front page. I immediately withdrew this particular newspaper- this is stuff children must never see.

Oh dear, oh dear, no good day for me [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/blush.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blush.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I agree. I'd rather keep my four-year-old from even catching a glimpse of that.

Beslan was a horrid crisis, but may I add that the Chechens may not have been behind it. I'm normally not a conspiracy theorist, but I want you guys to note that in Russia, at this time, there was a sensational trial going on, that is Russia v. Khodorkovsky, the richest man in Russia.

I do not know if he did or not, but I believe Putin had a hand in the Beslan crisis - either in orchestrating it or in having the military launch their ridiculous, ill-conceived assault, taking attention (especially international attention) away from the mock trial Khodorkovsky was being submitted to.
