Be passionate.

Keeping an open eye on the Weeping Angels.
Inspired by SL's comment in reply to my tips on how to curb obesity, I thought I'd talk about a few things here that can ignite passion in people. Now, if you thought been passionate was merely getting your end away, then shame on you ;), read further to enlighten yourself.

Sport: What better place could there be than in a sporting arena. Imagine, if you will, being a spectator during a Pakistan v India Cricket match, England v Germany or Celtic v Rangers football matches or even England v Australia at Rugby in Twickenham (has to be at HQ). These are just four examples of where passion really does run high amongst the fans and players. And if you are there and you feel nothing, well, you can't be human.

Food: I am talking decent food here, not your fast food/pre-packed ready meals. We all have to eat and few, if any, would not feel at least a little bit of pleasure when presented with a dish of you favourite food.

Music: What else? Whether this is seeing the band live or just simply listening to their music. If it really gets to you and you feel the hairs on the back of your neck tingle, that is what music is for - oh the joy of it. Again, imagine this - your at the venue, the background music is playing and then starts to fade, the lights dim, you hear a little strum as a band member puts on and plugs in his guitar, the intro tape starts....what better place could there be at that very moment?

So, what else could we have?

And remember, passion is good for the soul. :)

Books.  There are countless numbers of books in our world, many of them trashy, but the good ones are one of the best pleasures in life.  I'm talking the type of book that grabs you by the throat and forces you to read cover-to-cover in one day.  A kind of book that compells you to read 'just one more chapter', until you realise it's 6 o'clock in the morning and you have to go to work.  Books like these are few and far between *coughRobertJordancough*, but are easily one of the best ways to pass time.

Hmm... that's a good topic. Of those things you mentioned, I am really passionate about music, of course. I suppose we all are on this board. I think you said it all there, and I don't really have anything to say that isn't stating anybody's thoughts.

Food: well, yeah. I love a good meal. I don't know if I get really passionate about it, though.

Sports: sorry, not for me.

Now, what other things do I get passionate about? One thing is most probably drawing. I can't see an empty sheet of paper in front of me, and as soon as I have a pencil at hand, I draw stuff on it, no matter how relevant or irrelevant, no matter how simple or stupid. I found that drawing is one of the few things I can really lose myself in and forget everything around me. I'm not very good at it, but I still love doing it. I hate running out of details to draw, so my pictures tend to be incredibly detailed, no matter how big or small the scale.

Travelling: I noticed that again yesterday. I was sitting in the train on a four hour ride, and I had planned to do some learning for the university, but I found myself staring out the window the whole time. All kinds of thoughts crossed my head, and I just loved looking at the passing landscapes, be it the Brandenburgian plains, the farmlands of Saxony or forests of Thuringia- cities, old and new, rich and poor, tiny villages, huge train stations, I just couldn't get enough of it. One of my big dreams is travelling on such routes as the Trans-Siberian or the Trans-Canadian railways. Never mind the weather: it can be sunny, raining, storming, a blizzard, whatever, I will always get something out of it.

Writing: I suppose most of you have already guessed. I already get some sort of mild kick out of typing about my thoughts here. Just like drawing, I suppose the greatest reason for why I love it is because it is the ultimate creative process. I never managed to get my creative skills to excel, but I always loved being creative nevertheless.

History: I love learning about the past and thus understanding the world I live in. I love arguing and disagreeing with other people, and I love to hate the stupid viewpoints that keep being propagated and are harmful to people. Or maybe I just love disagreeing and arguing...

Researching and collecting: You can see this most clearly with my record collection. Of all those 300+ CDs, LPs, DVDs and whatnot I have got, I know virtually everything about them: I know the tracklist of most of them, I know when they were released, I know about the significance of the concerning record, and all that. If only this particular hobby wouldn't be so expensive.

Love: Well, I guess that's the ultimate passion, isn't it?

Too right! Once you've found your soulmate, the burning passion becomes a purifying flame that washes the darkness of the past away.

Apart from my woman, I'm also passionate about science (an old flame of mine that won't go out despite the disappointments and frustrations it generates) and culture (well, that's what the Iron Maiden Commentary is about after all).

I guess my years of working in the catering industry and eating out so much has rubbed off on me here. I don't care for the cooking of it (though my wife does), I just love eating the end result.

I know what you mean about travelling. I love to see other places and the urge to look out that window and admire the view is just too strong in some of us.

I, personally, would love to write properly (by that I mean not just the proper use of grammar etc., but to create stories and the like). There are times I do feel I have a story inside waiting to get written down, but I'm also just to frigging lazy.

I really like the way you word things, Mav. :)

One of the joys of this forum is reading peoples posts that are nicely worded.

Try as I might, I sometimes do struggle to read a book. I have a touch of dyslexia which really frustrates me when I read, I have to re-read again and again the same chapter to try and get it to sink in.

While I agree with Perun that sports in general don't do it for me, unlike him, do have a heart and warm blood and I'll go bonkers with any good Hockey or international football match. Music, books and writing are next on the list. Yet another thing I really love is talking. I absolutely LOVE just sitting around with my buddies and talk, about nothing, about something, tell jokes, remember stupid things... whatever really, but just talk and have a good time. I like listening to people the crazier the better since it tends to make them more interesting and it makes my life that much more crazy and interesting :D

The main joy of this forum, for me, is seeing nice people who inspire discussion, reading that discussion and feeling sorry to have missed it. :-[

My objects of passion are many: linguistics, maps, music and other forms of culture, as well as the wonderful way they relate to one another. I love discovering how everything in this universe is connected, and how you can't judge one thing, person or process without knowing their background.

I also love passionately. Mav put it nicely, but he forgot to mention that it hurts to be amidst purifying flames. Real passion moves you to do things and to make yourself vulnerable to pain. Love without this passion is just an empty word.

Too right Silky, I've spent countless nights reading his work. There is always at least two or three parts that just send shivers up my spine when reading them in each book. A pure joy to read.
I enjoy having a good laugh with friends, just sitting back and relaxing in good company and talking about wahtever comes to mind.
Music is very important to me, as I'm sure it is to almost everyone on this forum. Blues, jazz, metal, anything that I can get my teeth stuck into that is nice to listen to.
